If the car was over 3 years old when it was imported it doesn't need an SVA.

Question

A friend of mine has just put a deposit down on an 8 year old 45000 miles RX7 Twin Turbo. This car was imported from Japan by a dealer in Ipswich, but the dealer said it hasn't had an SVA test and that it doesn't need one. Is this true?
