Sti V5 is the best overall Impreza
#1
Bit bored... lets stoke some fires.
In my opinion, given all factors including price, looks and ability, I say that an Sti V5 with a tweaked suspension and 17inch alloys is the THE scooby to go for.
I'm tired of the anti import brigade in the press. Had an import for over 20 months now and whole heartedley recommend it to anyone with 13/14K to spend. Still can't see any reason to go for the P1 (unless only slightly more expensive) or the RB5.
In fact the Sti V5 is a better buy than an EVO5/6 or any of the other japanese 4wd options.
Got that off my chest.. time to relax......

So many threads on the bbs about 'my car better than your car' thing. It's all a bit long in the tooth, when Scooby owners are not slagging off other cars, they're then saying that theres is better than anyone else's....

I like either the Version 5. Dont really like the newage Impreza that much. If I had to choose between all the Imprezas built... Id probably either have to go with a 22b, or a P1.

Was thinking about this over the weekend while Bob R was fitting a Link to my STI V5 Type R V-Ltd. Would have originally liked a V6 but having seen the interior, I prefer mine in red/grey rather than the mix of blue fronts and grey rears of the V6 so mine with 17" P1's, Cibies, Link (Ace!!!) and soon to be 4 door 5th gear is quite simply the best there is.
Sorry but if you had a run in it, you'd think so too.

I'll agree, Type R's do rule, especially the V5
I am the owner of an STi 5 and this, out of all the STi's is the weakest built, the STi 4 is the strongest, all Scooby's especially the imports are prone to engine's going via the Big End No3 Crank Shaft bearing, I foudn out in mine after the purchase and drove it just 2200 miles before mine went, I was on the verge of taking thr garage to court before they agreed to get it fixed under warranty, and not only that, its booked in at Graham Goode Racing, not only to recieve a full engine rebuild, but its getting uprated everything, oil pump, fuel pump, STi v4 Pistons, gaskets etc etc etc.... overall, i'll be getting a much stronger car back and hopefully will get away with it not going again..
Just my 2penny worth..... but to be honest, if I had my choice again, i'd get an Evo 5 or 6, less problems, not only that though, but they just dont have the flat4 bark of the boxer engine do they ? and the Evo's insurance is higher

I've only had mine 6 months so can't say much but with a Link, Motul 300V Competition oil and a higher 5th gear, the big end prob might not rear it's ugly head.
Fingers crossed

whoever told you the import is more likely to go is talking bollox.
who ever told you the sti 4 was the strongest is also talking bollow.
there is pretty much no diff between a version 3 and a version 4.Except the 3 is more likely to be closed deck as it is older.
I would not put version 4 pistons in a version 5. They have a different squish design, and the head gaskets are different thicknesses so you will end up with probably the wrong compression ratio, which wont work properly with your standard ecu.
If ggr are going to bother uprating the parts, I wouldnt bother using standard pistons anyway. They are good, but no one knows how much they can handle.
I also wouldnt touch the oil pump! the standard one produces plenty pressure and modifications I have seen are more likely to jam than anything else.
group n group a and wrc didnt change theirs romt he standard design, which works well, although wrc are rebuilt much more frequently than others.

MMmm - well my Sti V has had 50k miles of being heavily tuned - running about 340-350bhp for at the last 30k miles - on road and heavily abused on track...
...still works like clockwork - doesn't even use much oil.

My aim was not create a 'I own a < > so it's the best' thread....
I just want to do my 2 cents worth to stop the anti Import hysteria that I have noticed in recent times. SO many times I see people close to buying an import and then back off because of fears that generally have no base.
I'ts not as risky as it seems and the difference between the standard UK scoob and an STi V5 is immense. SO anyone out there tempted; go for it!

No doubt the STI V looks the best (after the 22B that is). Pesonally I'd prefer an STI IV with a V mose and rear end job. The IV engine is known to be much more reliable and has a better/bigger blower.
I own neither but have driven both and a standard IV feels faster.

Agree with DaveR, I too have an STI-V with Link etc and its fantastic, I am of course totally biased because I love the STI-V anyway!
RussP,
Dont most Scoobs have folding mirrors?

I think only STI's have folding mirrors, so imports are better
Whhhiiiirrrr Whhiirrrrr what's that sound?
That'll be the sound of my electric wing mirrors flapping on my STI IV Type R. The best Subaru ever made.

the version 4 does nto have a better/bigger blower, it has a vf24 as opposed to the vf28 of the version 5, these are almost identical. The version 3 sti had a vf23 which is bigger, perhaps that is what is being confused?
The only specific weak point of the version 5 is the maf sensor, but run a different ecu and that becomes a moot point.
