Just got back from the pub where my mate tells me he is about to start negotiations for a silver 1997 STi with full decat, induction kit and 340 bhp, wants my advice on a reasonable value to pay and what to look out for. All help welcome.

I don't want to tell him the whole we're all clueless. I think he's being asked £11k.

Where to even begin?? One thing to look out for is the synchros I guess. If the gearing feels notchy (like synchros are gone), you've got the choice of reconditioning the box (I was quoted 600 quid for this) or to walk away..

edit: When he test the car, make sure its cold to begin with and listen out for piston slap. I think its this particular year that suffers from it. Do a search on this subject.

If its putting out 340 then I would suggest that you make sure mods have been done by a reputable 3rd party as to get 340 requires ECU mods.
No way can you get 340 from exhaust & induction.

Might be worth getting an RAC inspection ?
Will save you money in the long run if it turns up something nasty & you walk away.
