KNACKER'D PULLEY
#1
Having a nice drive today, sitting at about 30ish, then all of a sudden the steering went solid and the parking & battery light came. No lose of power I pulled over and to my amazement the fan was lying on the under tray and the cranckshaft pulley was wobbling about I too it off and the centre bolt hole was now a oval smashin'. Tightend everything up and and drove home. The pulley is knackd' 58000 miles on the clock, neary 4 yrs old, I wonder how the garage will deal with it!!!
I will let you know how I get on.
Not hat bad but I thought I would just say it anyway.
Cheers VKL

Funny u should post this as the same thing happened to me last week on the way to Surry.
Lucky that the pulley did'nt come off the crankshaft but it did knacker the air-con belt, the pulley and the woodruff key.
The worst thing was it happened on the M4 at about 11pm also it was booked in with P.E so I had to cancel.
Got relayed home to turn around and go back up with the Galaxy.(Well gutted)

My mother in laws Celica 2.0 (16 Valve) has JUST done the same thing (cool mum in law huh? ) tho the bolt actually broke, the effect was similar. In this case tho, the garage tried persuading her it was a new crank that was reuqired due to a tiny amount of damage to the nose of it! (woman on her own and all that...)
So, saved her the £2.5k they wanted, ripped the motor out and fitted a new one (£189 for the pulley :eek no big deal.
So of course they brand it a "bodge" and "probably dangerous"

Went through 3 crankshaft pullys on my Seat turbo diesel... Mind you I did rev the b0ll0cks off it (138mph on the GPS!!!).
Eventually replaced the crankshaft under warranty and gave the car back to the dealer (lease )

Waiting to see what Subaru will do! Should I get the head port'd * polished, if you can do this to the sport engine. Does anyone have ideas what I should do with the engine. No turbo conversions.

Bit spooky this as my Cossy off the road at the moment because of...wait for it....a knackered crank pully!!! Pity I didnt find the cause of the strange knocking noise (i.e. the wobbling pully) BEFORE Id pulled off the alternator, all the belts, the cam belt tensioner, the cam belt itself, the strut brace, the turbo water return, the cam cover and both the cams!!!!!! Borrocks
