Question

Saw a strange two-tone red/silver (lovely choice!) N-reg wagon today on A34.

This thing had a full on off-roader style bull bar on the front and spare wheel on the back. It was branded on side and spare wheel cover as 'Gravel Express'

Is this some Aussie outback special???

I was always under the impression that this was THE original Scooby.

I do like the name Gravel Express.

It's a GC8 WRX wagon with outback-style suspension & bullbars+outboard spare wheel.
It has 220ps with automatic gearbox. A Japan only special ed.

I've seen two of these semi mythical beasts, both red/silver, one was at Botley Motors near Southampton. It was imported by them for a customer and was on an M plate. Don't know if its still there or not, I found it on Autotrader when I was looking to buy my MY98 UK Wagon. There is currently another one at Autoterminal in Southampton.
The first one had no bullbars or spare wheel thingy on the back but it was a manual, the latter has all the bits but is auto.
These things are as near as dammit a Jap spec WRX with the suspension raised, presumably to clear the gravel!

AFAIK, there's a basic version of the Gravel Ex with steel wheels. The manual again has 220ps as opposed to the 240ps the saloon has.

I've seen one of these on the M42 Birmingham Junc 6, red and silver again, it even had an externally mounted spare wheel on the tail gate with a "Gravel Express" wheel cover (4x4 style).
