Question

I know there is a WRX STI (2002) and there is a WRX STI Type UK (2002) What are the differences between the two? And I guess the Type UK was made for sale in the UK and it cant be imported, right?

Question

I dont know for certain but I believe the type UK has less power :-( at 265(?) PS, I think the Non type UK has closer to 300bhp, but has 1 less cat. The non UK also has tinted rear windows, but you cant get a non UK Prodrive style version.

And the other thing of course the non type UK will be imported so wont have your 3 year warrenty and no Subaru dealer should service it.

Oh and the non type UK version has the best mod you can buy for a UK scoob.......a rear windscreen wiper!!!!!!

Unhappy

You can buy a JDM spec STi7 but in most cases your going to be throwing your money down the drain as now that there is an "official" STi for the uk market the grey imports dont hold their price as well....

Tony,

That depends on whether or not you want a warranty (if you plan to start modding straight away you might not), whether you want a faster car out of the box, whether you want the lower geared, harder sprung JDM STi etc. etc. Bear in mind that you can pick up brand new JDM STi's now for less than £20K all in.

Ace, main differences are, the Type UK has a front and rear LSD, the JDM has the rear one but the front is an option, the JDM has lower gearing, no centre cat, 276bhp vs the UK 261, lower gearing on the JDM and is harder sprung. Insurance can be more difficult to find and it's generally more expensive.

You can import the Type UK from Europe just like the WRX but there are less savings to be had. All the Prodrive Style cars have now been made and mostly sold, but there are still a couple left at a few UK dealers.

Hope this helps

Matt

The JDM STi gets a rear wash wipe, options for HID headlights, a strut brace, rear tinted windows plus the JDM Prodrive Style gets a roof vent. There is of course an option for a 5 door STi in JDM form (although it does miss out on a few of the 4 door STi trick bits).

On the negative side is the mapping for 100RON which allows for the rev limit to be set higher (but to trust it on 97RON?), a Japanese tuned stereo, and somethings which are standard on the UK version which are options on the JDM...just make sure you choose them!

As far as I know and all the data I have seen says that the gearing is the same between ALL versions of the STi, whether it is JDM or UK. Even the RA uses the same 6 speed ratio box.

If eventually you go for a JDM sti then make sure its the GL version with the suretrac diffs and not the KL none suretrac diff version

Steve,

The JDM STi deffinately has lower gearing. Here are some logging results I've had from a JDM and UK STi:

JDM in 3rd @ 7000rpm = 67.5mph
UK STi in 3rd @ 7000rpm = 70mph

JDM in 4th @ 6500rpm = 85mph
UK STi in 4th @ 6500rpm = 88mph

JDM STi in 5th @ 6480rpm = 110mph
UK STi in 5th @ 6480rpm = 123mph

No 6th gear figures yet ( ), my private road isn't long enough ( )

Could the figures be due to the JDM having a converter from kph to mph whilst the UK spec has a more precise factory conversion unit (or more accurately calibrated/marked speedo)? Either way they look pretty close (ok apart from 5th).

My sources are various magazines and the Chris Rees book which state the gear ratios and if you then check them against the UK spec, they are the same. As the JDM version was released here first on the grey market I would have suspected them to get the ratio correct for the JDM (ie not just copy the UK spec for their data).

Matt...you are correct!

It didn't help that Subaru Japan only give the specs out in PDF format in Japanese which confuses the hell out of my version of Acrobat!

Gearing for the UK & JDM are the same for
1st 3.636
2nd 2.375
3rd 1.761
4th 1.346
and then different for
5th 0.971 1.062
6th 0.756 0.842
Same reverse and final drive
Reverse 3.545
Final 3.900

Interesting difference in 5th and 6th which explains a lot and the need for PPP.

Steve
