Newbie - RB5 Questions
#1
Hi all,
I'm considering buying a RB5 from a Subaru dealer and would welcome your views on the price. The car is a non Prodrive model 99 on a V with 41k miles. The dealer wants £18k for it, parkers guide says £15.5. This is obviously a hell of a difference.
What is your views on a fair price for this model etc. I would welcome your opinion.
Any other advice on my prospective purchase would be most welcome.
Cheers
RB.

Hi Robbie,
I too love RB5s! In last weeks Top Marques there are about 5 RB5s all being sold privatly. They are all going for £18-20K.
They have all done around 15K miles. Regs mainly T.
(One of them has the PPP, its £19K)
Bearing this in mind, it seems its up to u if u want to 'risk' buying one privatly and therefore get one with less milage.
As far as the car is concerned, i would definitly choose an RB5 too. U could get a nice Jap Sti 5 for the same money, but the insurance would be far more costly.
I'm sure someone else here will be able to give u better advice than me (im 19 and have a Nissan!!) but thats what i think anyway!
PS I was getting driven round Knockhill this week in an RB5 and it was ace!! Real nice car
Hope this is of help
Kos
(Edited cause i didnt realise u were talking about a 41K miler!!)

There are quite a few RB5s around - there were 2 at Carstins near Coventry when I was there Saturday. Can't remember the prices (didn't really look) but it's worth comparing if you might be pushing £2.5k down the toilet!
BTW - one at Carstins had an STi V6 (I think) spoiler, other had standard one.

I'd say it had too many miles on to be worth anthing near that, it should have 20k max. If it had the PPP then ok, but as it doesn't it's well overpriced. Saying that, their value is actually going up again at the moment...try and get a PPP RB5 if you can afford it+insurance though. No real reason to go for a dealer as you're gonna get the remainder on the warranty anyway, get it HPI checked and maybe inspected...

IMHO
The miles are high for the year - should be more like 25-30K miles.
With this in mind i would make them an offer say 2K less and let them 'beat' you up £600.00 or so so's you get it £ 1400.00 less.
The car only has 20K of warranty left - although this can be extended at a cost.
Although the miles are high-ish for the age they seem to wear it well mechanically.
give it a whirl and do not be in too much of a hurry - if they do not accept then leave it a couple of weeks - say 'till the end of the month and try them again - if it is sold then there a lots of others out there if not, it is more likely down to price v.s miles and it could be time to do a deal. Remember every week on the forecourt is a week it has depreciated so less margin the the dealers.
Also the 45K service is the BIGGIE - cambelts et al and is likely to be £ 450.00+ so you will have this to look forward to in 4k miles - also a good bargaining tool.
even if they offer to do the service if you take it at the sticker price i would try to get it at least 1K less.
Yes they are not all that common but it is still a buyers market
