Honda S2000 - 180mph? Surely not?
#2
Friend has read on his S2000 BB that someone claims to have had their Honda S2000 at 175-180mph (he's taken the 155mph restrictor off).
I say that's rubbish. Surely a 2 litre 240bhp (esp with VTEC's low torque) would not have the grunt to overcome wind resistance at that speed to get it to it's
theoritical maximum of 180mph at 9000rpm?
Settle this one for me :-)
(as an aside, can any road car get to it's theoretical maximum speed at max rpm in top gear?)

I would doubt it seriously.
their cda rating is low as cars go, so wind resistance may not be crucial.
i cant imagine it will redline in top though.
I would hazard a guess at 165 amybe 170, rememvering a 10% speedo error.

Warning! My dad had one of these behind him on the autobahn a few weeks ago (with the roof up) he was crusing at 155 and this thing was flashing out of the way!
Perhaps its possible?

yep - no chance
maybe its an "indicated 175"; which could be, say, 15% optimistic and therefore a true speed of 148 which sounds more realistic.
But I'm not sure what you mean by:
> Surely a 2 litre 240bhp (esp with VTEC's low torque) would not have the grunt to overcome wind resistance at that speed to get it to it's
A 240 bhp engine still makes 240 bhp. Its just down to the gearing whether its useful or not. The fact that it doesnt make masses of power at 3000 - 6000 rpm is irrelevant, as long as you can change gear and keep the revs up
Drag, power and gearing are more important than torque throughout the rev range if you're going for top speeds.

Pop over to the RS Owners club BBS, they've just had a flat out day at Bruntingtorpe (I think it was there) - a 550bhp cossie sierra has just beaten Mike Rainbirds old record by 2 mph with a new speed of 182 mph. I wonder how the Honda S2000 would've got on ?

I've got an S2K
180mph? You're having a laugh. It's a quick car, but not that quick. 150mph may be possible but I wouldn't want to keep the car at the 9K limit for the length of time it would take to get there. There's no 155mph restrictor (JDM have the 117mph).
In a straight line and on the track it's quicker than my Impreza (Ok stock MY00 Turbo) but on back roads where the lack of torque hurts the Impreza is quicker.
In the US there's a supercharger available which may make a difference but no a 30mph delta. I suppose the only other way to reach Vmax would be to have longer gearing. VTEC's really need short gearing to keep the
VTEC cams. The S2K is far better than my old Integra-R (which in turn blows away the Accord-R) as I don't have to bounce off the rev limiter to keep the VTEC cams on change up. Having the extra 6th gear and an absolutely gorgeous transmission really helps here
