True....but the S4 is under tuned (It does have 300ft/lb torque). AmD can chip them to 320BHP apparently and MTM go even higher....
BHP isn't everything, most people are much better off with lots of torque...

You can get them for 19K now (T Plate 40ish K miles)
AmD chip and setup is £850 sooo not very expensive
Just got to find the right one now....Might even go for the Avant ..how pissed off would you be in your STi7 if a Audi Estate left you in a straight line...Maybe I'll rebadge it as a TDI:0

The S4 has been out of production for a year so Jeff will not have spent £36k. More like 20-24k. Ive owned one and whilst they are not perfect as std, a few mods see Scooby eating pace

Very nice car, I almost brought a 2 year old but it was too expensive for me. Consided the S3, but it only comes in 3 doors.
Hence I got another scooby...
Enjoy it. My dream car is either a RS4 Avant or the new RS6. I saw the RS6 in the flash at Goodwood a few weekd back, verrrry nice... Avant is very much a Q car...
Gareth.

The one I test drove was just so relaxed on the Motorway at 90 in 6th....and it pulled hard when you flattened the pedal
And as for the build quality......nothing rattled, creaked or groaned....

Suppose its like buying any second hand performance car you are unlikely to find one which has been driven to the shops and back and never taken over 3000 rpm. 19K woudl buy a seriously modifed T plate scoob

Mega....I'll still be around on Scoobynet 'cos I've looked at the Audi equivalent and its errr pants
Highly modified MY99....19K....would have to be one of Burns old cars for that much !
Anyway, once the Audi is here my secret plan (but don't tell the wife) is to get a Fisher Fury kit and a Honda Blackbird engine and put the two together...170BHP & 450Kg...just for a laugh you understand

Make sure that you upgrade the brakes before you think about an (or Oettinger/ABT etc) re-chip. By the way, AMD had about 6 weeks work last time I called in - that tells you something !
I'm an Audi fan / recent owner and I think that the Bi-turbo engine is superb - smooth, sustained power from low down. Grip levels are absolutely top drawer.
Where it scores lower (IMHO) is on the brakes (which you can sort, but DON'T go for EBC pads - took mine off at the dealer. Also the refinement is very good so the sensation of speed isn't always there. The handling is ok

I keep trying to leave cars at the lights in my A4 Avant TDi 110 auto.....but for some reason I cant
BUT its nicer to drive than the scoob and does more than twice the mpg. Id LOVE a quatro one with a big motor
Still keeping the scoob though.

Audi S4.
If you've ever driven one you'll realise how boring it is and
no way does it respond as well as a 280bhp Scooby. Scoob is nearly as light as a modern day Golf (this is a slight diasdvantage at 150 mph on the motoway as the car does sway) but means awesome take off. The Audi 4wd system is not as flexible.
I dabbled in a purchase decision last year and decided to spend only 16K and get an imported Sti V5. Haven't regretted once as the SCoob has cost me servicing and pads in 18 months.
Quality car it is but a classic it is not. There isn't a magazine review out there that would put the S4 ahead of a P1.
For 19 grand you could get a P1.
Saying that if it was a choice between M3 and S4 I'd go S4 as it's so rear.
Drive one before you buy. Different sort of car to Scoob.
Good Luck.

My buying criteria are somewhat different this time around. I bought my MY00 Impreza to be a daily driver so I wasn't having to use the Porsche every day. It has proven to be very reliable and apart from fuel costs cheap to run....but....
Doing 200 miles in a hit in an Impreza can be very wearing. I'm also bored with the image that causes people to follow you home and steal the keys, or carjacking. The P1 is a nice car but the cabin still looks like a standard Impreza and the wing on the back just makes you a bigger target for the Police/Thieves etc. Have you seen the number of Novas/Corsas with Scooby bonnet scoops on them ????
I've driven an S4, and while I agree that it doesn't have the frantic (or exciting as you would describe it ) feel of an STi/P1 thats probable the reason that I'm drawn to it....Its very smooth at Motorway speeds and has a significant amount of torque for acceleration, and you don't even feel when the turbos come in. The turbo spool-up in an Impreza is one of the reasons that it feels exciting.
Anyway, as someone who runs a Computer Consultancy I get comments about the Impreza all the time from clients whereas the Audi is a 'grown-up car' which nobody will care about. I almost bought a Jaguar XJR but decided that it was too in your face for most clients.
