Here's a few piccies I forgot I had from the RSOC day at Castle Coombe in 1999.

How about adding your own captions

And Yes the driver was O.K although I bet he was a bit stiff the following day.

Ian, are you able to post that bit of the video on the BBS??

Looking forward to receiving the rest of the footage

With regards to helmets, on my first track-day I thought it strange why we had to wear helmets, since some people drive almost as fast on public roads. But since then, well I wouldn't do anything different, even if I could.

BTW track-days aren't as dangerous as they look, as long as you remain within the limits of you car and your driving skills. But exceed these (or have a mechanical failure ) and you need to have a heavy dose of luck on your side.

P.S. Did the driver have presence of mind to put it into the tyres backwards or was it just luck. Would have been alot worse going in sideways or front first.

Charlie

I quite liked Castle Combe, I thought the run off was quite generous, when compared to Oulton Park.

And of course there's the 'ring' which is bloody terrifying....

Very nasty!

That yump just before quarry is evil, brake before or after, but not on top of it.

Also I have been to some "open" track days where people dont have to ware helmets. I think this is daft and could bring the "track day" thing it disrepute if someone gets killed or veged. For instance at the CCC day at coombe a few weeks ago a girl drove a dihatsu into the barrier sideways at quarry, she wasnt waring a helmet and hurt her bonce, fortunatley it was only a little knock so she was ok.

Helmets have to be a must.

I was in David Lewis's Waggon when we lost the brakes on the hairpin at Bedford last May.

Luckily at that point there was a mass of run off (and Dave handled it extremely well). Had it been corner 8 I may not have been here.

Lids all the way.

Castle Combe claims another.

Saw a TVR do almost exactly the same, that yump is terrifying aspecially as there is little/no run-off.

Won't go to CC anymore, sooner or later you have a serious off. With the complete lack of run-offs at CC that off can fast become a tragedy.

I've got that on video. I think there was a passenger as well, he got out of the car before it went up in flames and doubled up on the grass then they got the helicopter out. Put me right off track days.

From what I've seen of the spot where this guy went off, most people who crash there leave backwards. The yump on the lead in to the corner can really unsettle the car if you get it wrong or over-cook it on the straight leading up to it...

The first track day I ever did was at Castle Combe... back in the days when it was XR3i's. And indeed as long as you off towards the centre of the track there is loads of run off! And I have had my fair share of creating a new track through the grass

However I have ruined tyres on rocks out of the gravel filled ditches, that could have tipped the car into a roll far too easily, and seen some very scary accidents, mostly related to that corner (and one on the opposite corner - don't know the name - where a guy lost his brakes to be stopped by the tyres)

I am begining to be a fan of airfield days... Some people claim they are a bit boring... Me I like a nice damp day, no gravel (grrr ) and AWD so I can watch the TVR's pirouette off in complete safety.

Hello,

Re

I have done some track days and spectated at some and also "Club Days" and Open days.

The main concern I have it being hit by someone else, or loosing it when trying to avoid a spinner.

You see all sorts of fun and games at the open/club days (ie £20 a session) but the Bookatrack ones are really well run and safe.

guess on impact speed... if it was a tyre wall as it looked then it must have been very high... if there is something solid behind it then id say backwards at 85 mph

any other opinions?

I know how he feels....
At least CK1 survived to make me smile again , I doubt that Cossie did.
Castle Combe is a worrying circuit, there seems to be a distinct lack of marshalling present and their open events seem to be 'anything goes' type jobbies.
Ho Hum.

Stef.

Stef,

I have been out on Castle Combe in the last couple of weeks... CCC day... I didn't have a problem with the marshalling... I didn't leave the track in an unscheduled manner... I was driving an 'orrible old rwd bmw too... hum. Maybe I wasn't driving to 11 or 12-10ths. ho hum.
