Help needed - Smoke on startup
#1
Wonder if anyone can throw some light on a problem with the wagon. Twice now (and by no means everytime) black smoke billows from the exhaust on startup. It seems to follow a blast on the previous journey where I've given it some stick (I always let it tick-over afterwards). Im pretty sure its not valve seals since leaving it for a few days does not create lots of smoke (which I think would be blue anyway).
Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Colin how are you......
It might be possible that you have an injector leaking slightly and when you turn off the engine small droplets of fuel drip into the manifold......hence when you start up the vehicle overfuels a bit????????
Its a possibility
Its not oil as you say, rings, valve stem seals etc because you said the smoke is black not blue!!!!
Hope this helps
Cheers

Hmmmm, I would associate black smoke with Fuel, and running rich....
Perhaps that could be the problem?
You could always whack it on the SIDC questions bbs thingy magig and someone will post the answer Colin...may take a few days but the idea is that it stays there until one of the FAQ team decides what the right answer is, and then you wont get all confused.
Hope your well
Ron

My old Corrado VR6 produced some smoke - not on start-up, and grey rather than black.
Turned out the cat had gone. It kept setting on fire in the pipe. My tame VW specialist had to drill out bits of melted platinum to fit a new one.
Anyway, yours doesn't sound like that, Colin!

Nice one Jase
A bit worried since this problem follows the piston slap problem being fixed. Lancaster have spoken to IM. Injector leak has been mentioned as has a seal in the turbo. As I said b4, it seems to only follow a good blast the day before which is really odd ???
