I have just been told that there is two STI types being brought into Europe by Subaru.
First there’s the one with the Suretrac diff in front and another STI with just the standard WRX drivetrain.
And that there’s no way of telling which is which.
Is this true?

Let me guess.
This came from a dealer.
When you mentioned "I might import one".
There might well be, but specify a type UK and you can't go wrong. As an anecdote, you could order a right hand drive Turbo (pre MY01) without airbags and ABS in holland, but not many people did

Eh, It would be hard to specify a UK type if I don’t live in the UK!
Anyway it wasn’t a dealer.
So basically the UK gets the Suretrac STi and the rest of Europe gets a bog standard WRX drivetrain on the STI, right?

The EU spec STi's are EXACTLY the same as the Type UK, except they don't have a Type UK rear badge, Alarm or Tracker.
There is in fact no such thing as a UK spec STi as the Type UK is actually the EU spec car - even the Subaru UK press release talks about the Euro Spec STi, it doesn't mention a "uk spec"
I don't believe you can get an EU spec 5 door.

It seems to me that Subaru only makes 3 spec variants in all its model ranges - export, US/CDN & JDM.
Export spec conforms to EU type approvals, & FHI allows individual importers to choose different levels of equipment, providing they are type approved for the respective countries.

KevMac, there is only one spec of STI being brought into EU countries (inc ROI) there is only one cert. of conformity, and that has Suretrac LSD's, your original informant was talking ROLLOCKS

Would it clear this up to say that any car with EU type approval will, by it's nature, have a Suretrac LSD?
The only ones without will be (some) JDMs and these have to go through the SVA route in the UK. (Sorry Kev, dunno for Ireland)

Iain,
Shut it smuggie
I guess you could say that only JDM STi's are available without the front LSD?
Matt
This is like saying you couldn't import a Prodrive version of the STI

You can get the prodrive version form Belgium. I had a dealer quote me for one. However each part was broken down with a separate price.

Olley,
The 250 Prodrive Style cars that were for markets other than the UK (1000 made, IM bought 750) are available for order these from anywhere (I think), except the UK. That also means that UK import dealers should also be able to get them (as they source their cars from outside the UK).
