Does this mean that if you are 5-up in the car the air-bags won`t work properly? The weight of 5 people will lower the car by a similar amount to sensible lowering springs?
Perhaps this is some strange Japanese way of telling you not to mess around with the suspension!

Question

Finally decided to read the handbook that came with my MY01 ( I'm an IT guy I never read manuals )

It mentions that the suspension of the car should not be altered because this will alter the deployment of the Airbags in the event of a crash.

The reason is that the sensors which detect impact are no longer operating in the tolerances designed.

Perhaps Pete Croney could advise.

It might be something to do with the car being artificially low, ie. lowered not by the actual load present. Normally a problem with brake bias and the like but obviously has other implications.

I've had another thought - the sensors are going to have a harder job deciding between and impact and simply a bad road surface if the suspension is stiffer?

Although you would need it fairly stiff and a decidely dodgy road surface!

Just had a stunning thought chaps - DON'T drive into anything! The air-bags won't need to inflate then...

It had crossed my mind to mention that too.....

JohnD, bear in mind that they could be saying that altered suspension PLUS maximum load (eg 5 people) could cause the problems, as when setting the tolerances they take max load into account.

Still if there was a problem why would subaru sell you the suspension?
