All mine fits in a wagon (5 door) no stress ... and I carry a lot around with me.
I took my 'normal' load down to the dealer when I was looking to buy to make sure .. cue confused looking sales people
Steve
Still gutted there is no UK STi Wagon

Buy a grey import Forester turbo (STB, TTB or STi). They come with about 240-280 bhp (in Japan).
Will do 60 in 6.34 secs, 100 in 18.23 and the 1/4 in 15.14 with an ITG filter and rear Scoobysport box.
Downside is ride. Its jacked up in the air and the ARBs are a bit thinner than the Impreza - but nothing that can't be overcome.

I have the Fastest Forester in South Africa.
Potential is huge, depending on your needs. Mine runs to 60mph in 5.8 secs, 1/4 mile in 14.4 and tops out at a true 150mph. It also runs with a WRX around the track.
I have done: VF23 Turbo, 3"Exhaust, Dumpvalve (original bleeds away boost over 5psi), Boost Controller at 11psi, Whitline ARB's (exactly the same as Impreza), TEIN Coilovers.
Next mod is Garret T3/4, unichip, FMIC and GT gearbox and diffs (higher top end).

Hi Obi & Brian,
The rear box is as per the Impreza box and is quite noisy but I think quite nice. I felt very little difference in performance until I added the ITG air filter. Mid range torque was quite noticeable. Looking at the rolling road outputs, it looks like the filter & back box adds about 10 bhp and similar torque - so I guess that my STB is back to its proper Japanese output of 240 bhp (Jap output quoted on 100 RON fuel).
Brian,
The ARB certainly has stopped the rolling at the rear and given some sharper feedback on the steering. The thicker bar is meant to cause more understeer onlift off throttle- but I have not really noticed it (perhaps I am not trying hard enough).
Ride is unchanged as the ARB only really comes into play on corners
The ARB can be purchased from most Subaru breakers for about £30. You will also need new ARB rubber bushes.

Fast Forester - you need to check out the forester forum on I-club, you and everyone else here would be well advised to visit if you haven't already.
As to the original question, I do a lot of angling, rock climbing and scout camping. A wagon is nowhere near as good as a forester when it comes to carrying stuff, the hatch width is too narrow, and the slope of the hatch wastes a lot of space. That is my experience from driving the bugeye wagon and my forester. I can fit an 8ft uglystik boat rod in my forester without it touching the back window. The forester also has better ground clearance and self levelling suspension which is useful if you have do go down rutted tracks to get to your venue. An impreza has reasonable good clearance, but not when it's full of fishing crap.

On topic: Fast Forrester - that sounds like a very interesting proposition!
off topic:
I believe I know some ladies (and indeed genlemen) who have at one time in their life had the misfortune to be hit several times by said implement. I also hear that Jade sponsors this particular tackle. Allegedly.

Oh, forgot to add:-
I have a standard UK MY01 S-turbo and have seen 130mph on the clock. Performance is held back by a smaller turbo than on the impreza, but boost comes in a lot earlier to make for deceptively quick progress. They do roll a bit, but a thicker rear ARB does wonders allegedly. There's a new version due out in the autumn that is reputed to be better in all respects. PPP is only available for the original Forester as the present version is more powerful as standard.
PS. Ugly stik - LOL @ Chiark!

Think about an imported Legacy Estate (GT-B)
280 bhp out of the box (260 bhp auto)
Twin turbos dont give the punch of an Impreza single turbo, but far more refined.
Oh, and it probably carries more !

Butty-final question!!
Is replacing the ARB at the rear as simple as it sounds, just unbolt the original and bolt on the replacement + new bushes?
It seems like a simple but effective mod'

Brian,
Yes it is simple. It helped that our drive points slightly downhill and placing the rear wheels on the brow gave me more room to thread the ARB around the exhust. Two spanners or a socket and spanner were all I needed and there was no movement of any component when I took the bolts out.
Changing the bar got rid of a lot of oversteer and now I can slide all four wheels at will with confidence. The secret is to 'ignore' or deliberately push through the initial body sway and suddenly you'll find the grip. Practice, practice practice.
My next experiment will probably be an anti lift kit because the long suspension travel makes the lift all the more apparent.

Yes, as Obi says. The bar will be slightly different in shape around the rear box but all fits in with any hassle. Probably about 15 minutes work.
Talking of suspension, has anyone found a suitable kit to lower the Forester?
I was thinking about using the new WRX set up as the Impreza and Forester weigh the same, so the spring strengths would match. The only problem I can think of is that the strut rods are much shorter so the lowering would be impossible.
Any info please?
