MPG

Just thought I'd let you know of my recent mpg, all on Optimax .. the car is a MY99 4dr Turbo standard apart from SS BB and ITG panel filter ...
264 miles on 34 litres = 35mpg (was a steady drive, mostly motorways)
339 niles on 54 litres = 29 mpg (cruising c. 90mph up and down the A1, hard acceleration from roundabouts )
180 miles on 53 litres = 15 mpg (harder driving )
Just shows you the differences between hard and steady driving, but you can get good mpg out of a scoob if you want to but its no fun and very frustrating ... never again!!
Cheers
Phil

The 35mpg must have been under 70 on the speedo - a law abiding Subaru ?!
(See the Tek2 MPG thread as well - all at not-driving-for-economy speeds).
ps Used to get 40 from my Audi diesel but what the hell !

I have a MY99 and am about to move onto optimax once every month or so I have to go into the office 200 mile round trip so I would be intrested in the speed that you were traveling to get the 35mpg

I'm currently doing 3000miles a month in a 99MY. Not much longer I hope at these miles !
I use Optimax for every tank now and brim - At a steady 80-85 on the speedo I get around 27mpg. To get a true 35 mpg I'd reckon on about 60-65 with light throttle - got 31.5 in a Legacy Turbo at similar cruising speeds

Oh well 200 miles a month at a steady speed isn't too bad. So would you say that optimax is as good as people say ? I have heard that on a MY99 you do not have to reset the ecu as it resets after about 30 miles do you know if this is true?

I had to 'splash & dash' some 95RON for the first time yesterday morning (RB5 with TEK2) and the cut in power pulling onto the M5 was incredible. I then filled up twice more with SUL (Devon to Manchester & back in the one day) and the car was going better than ever. Today I filled up with Optimax and it felt flat.
If I understand correctly that the TEK2 'learns' fuel the same as the standard one then I'd say that a MY99 ECU takes advantage of better fuel pretty quickly without being reset.

I am extremely jealous of these MPG figures. If I drive my MY99 STI Type-R very carefully (on Optimax) I can, at best, achieve 21MPG. Although usually its about 18MPG. It doesn't make a difference how hard I drive, still I didn't buy it to do the weekly shopping in.

As far as ECU adjusting to new fuel, the rule of thumb seem sto be the newer the ECU the quicker it adjusts. MPG I get about 20mpg in my RA which considering the gearing and performance I can live with .

I have an MY96 WRX (267bhp.
I do 50 miles or so a day, mainly dual carriageway, up to 90mph or so, along the A456 Worcester to Birmingham. Worst mpg so far (in 2 months ownership) has been 18.9958 (thrashing it), best was Donnington convoy last week, 26.3mpg (which included racing home!).
I average 23.63mpg, mainly with air con on (I like arctic weather!). My previous car, a Honda Integra Type R, did near enough the same. I know which I prefer driving!!
(All on Optimax, btw!)

The 35mpg was going slowly with just one or two 'moments' from East Herts to tewkesbury (A10, M25, M40 and A40), set off early to leave myself time to find the place but the roads were dead so I just backed off and enjoyed the ride.
Back to normal today, took my mate out (he's got a 2.8 Z3) and you could almost see the petrol needle dropping as I was caning it ... he commented that the car was 'much faster than his motor' - nice!!!!
