Number Plates
#1
I was reading in my son's (Mini) mag about the new reg plates that come into force from Sept 1st this year.
Apparently, the law will also be changed so that the spacings and wordings are correct, and do not appear like names etc.
Also, manufacturers of reg plates and those who make them for you will have to put their name and postcode on them, so that any infringements can be tracked back, and then a fine imposed for making an illegal plate. The car owner will also be prosecuted.
Perhaps the moral of this is to get your plates asap, cos if you need one after Sept (to replace a broken one perhaps) you could be stuck.
The only uncertaintity is whether this applies to cars registered before Sept 1st, or whether it will apply to all cars.
Anyone else got any any supporting info?

IIRC this is only going to affect cars registered after Sept 1st. The proposal states that any new plate should conform to the new regulations which is easy to enforce on AA01AAA style plates but obviously not so easy to prove exactly when an 'old style' plate was made - be it made before or after this legislation is introduced.
I would have thought it will still be fairly easy to find someone to make you plates that do not bear postcode etc. as there are legitimate reasons for wanting to do this, show plates being the only real one. These would if course be the difficult ones to prove the age on.

There was a thread here a few weeks ago about this, and it quoted a link to the dvla web site. The web site had a lot of supporting information.
The most bizarre piece of information is that after Sept 1st it will be legal to have the blue column with the GB badge on - at the moment, according to the law, these plates are illegal!

funniest thing is the dvla web sites sales pitch on personal plates- on the one hand they want the plate standard but they still want to sell some for £500+++
they suggest things like " if your bob smith and your wife is gladis doris smith and your dog barks 55 times a day get BS 55 GDS"
hmmmm! at least people wont think you re a posh snob because your plate looks normal!!
