Question

IWell if you have one that's what it sounds like. According to Bike [July] all radar detectors-in fact, all electronic devices designed to reveal or give prior warning of speed traps, mobile or mounted are illegal again. Changes in law from June. £60 plus 3 points. Can anyone confirm?

It was just a proposal. It's currently being fought by several manufacturers. Not law yet, yet being the operative word. Allegedly the guy who thought the proposal up does'nt even have a car, or a driving license

The _proposed_ change in the law on Radar Detectors was intended to be done under a Statutory Instrument, which is normally used for emergency measures - not long term strategy.

Luckily (i hear) it was thrown out - but it will try to get back (possibly under another guise).

The proposed changes would (IIRC) up to a FIVE THOUSAND POUND fine plus 6 (or maybe even 9) points. Just having one in a car would be enough to get nicked!!!

If you are p1ssed off with the current anti-car propaganda, consider joining the ABD - see

Unhappy

If the UK follows Australia they'll be banned. They have been banned in OZ in almost all cities for about 10 years now. From what I've been reading here, UK and OZ are very similar when it comes to traffic violations, including the way they go about trying to pin you, by targeting all the big straight safe roads. Even the points system on licences is the same.

I forgot to mention, do you remember Peter Ryan? He was your old Police commissioner. Now he is the police commissioner of N.S.W Police in OZ.

Sorry, before the hysteria creeps in, a Statutory Instrument is the standard method for making an addition or an amendment to a law which does NOT NEED (as opposed to does not have time for) full-blown parliamentary approval, Royal Assent etc. It's usually signed by a minister (in this case, maybe Transport, or Home Office), not the Queen. Hardly emergency powers stuff.

Pass my anorak, will you?
