Does anyone have any views on which version of the STI is best rom a mechanical point of view?

I heard somewhere that the STI 3 is supposed to be stronger than later cars, though I don't know why that should be.

Are there any real differences between the 3,4,5 and 6 apart from the water spray on the later cars?

My Sti-2 had water spray. I'm looking to buy a 5 in the next couple of months, I'm going to go for a 5 as I don't believe there are any mechanical differences between the 5 and 6. The 5 engine should be strong, however I will almost certainly re-map the ECU to run on UK fuel.

From experience, my colleague at work knows that the synchro rings in the STi4 gearbox are better than those in the STi5+6.

He has suffered problems in this area on two occassions on his STi5. The first time the gearbox was rebuilt with STi5 items, and promptly failed again in fairly short order.

The gearbox was then rebuilt with STi4 items, and he hasn't had a problem since.

Read into this what you will.

Andy.
