Red face

Red face because I am hot not angry..

Air Con is making a hisssssing noise and water is dripping from underbelly pan when it is on... I am hoping there is a pipe loose somewhere... just cannot see anything.
Nothing obvious from the top / front of the engine... any suggestions...?

cheers

Ho ho JGM

Hmm, depends where the water is coming from, there is an outlet at the back of the engine bay to allow the condensation (i think) to drain out, this is perfectly normal ! the hissing, dont know ! first thing i would do is book it into the dealer and ask them to have a look and maybe get the system serviced for you if theres a problem !

I got this a lot, and it was (as Ian said) just the aircon unit causing condensation and dripping onto hot 'parts'!!

Particularly noticeable when the aircon has been on whilst 'giving it some'

My STI used to do the same thing. It's only the condensation dribbling off. Can be disconcerting at first though.

I nearly had a heart condition this weekend, when coming out of the restaurant, I saw some "oil" dripping from the engine... The car is 1.5 weeks old for Ch"#$$%'s sake !!!...

OOps..... it's only the aincon condensation outlet... Haven't you ever got dripped on the streets on a hot summer day by some air-con of a bank or insurance company ? It's the same thing !!!

Another question: Are you saticfacted with your A/C. On my father`s S80 is much powerfull A/C like in my MY98. If you look into engine you can see long aluminium pipe from compresor to A/C inside the car. In EU LHD car is this exactly behind turbo and intercooler. IMHO this nonisolated pipe work like engine cooler before enter into interior so it can help if you isolate it. I`am just trying to do it.

This is my second car with Air con...
the first car it didn;t work and it was a convertable so I didn;t see the point in fixing it...

It is cool... but yes it could be colder.. I had visions of being able to leave the frozen shopping in it... but this is not the case...

I have a RHD MY96 though...

No Idea about hissing (sorry, have it serviced) but:

Sunday, I did a 3pm 200 mile trip from Oporto to Lisbon. Outside temperature between 33 and 38º centigrade all the way. In the car, there was a steady 24º. Are there any colder AC's ?

I don't know, but any lower than this and I would have felt cold. It was cool, it was regular, it felt great. Ok, I think the temperature could get cooler quicker when I get into the car, but how important is that ?

Cheers

Max

Max,

My BMW holds a steady 16 degrees C with the A/C on. Now that's cold!

Yes my A/C do it too. Noise when starting compressor and sound like boiling water too. I trying isolate pipe only for one reason. I don`t want achieve lower temp. only improve effectivity = lower fuel consp. or not so big power loosing.

Why the hell should I want 16º in my car ? Can't even have decent sex on the front passanger seat at that temperature ...

No, really, anybody feel confortable under 22º, when the outside temperature is above 30 ? I feel the temp difference in so huge it's unconfortable. The ideal temperature inside a car is between 20 and 25º... anything else is just a waste of usefull energy... If it's above 30º, I have shorts and T-shirt on, and 16º is defenatly TOO COLD !!! Numbers are not important... Confort is

If outside temp is under 20, you don't need aircon...

Question

On a slightly different tack, I have noticed that if I switch my Aircon on and use it for a while and then switch it off, about 30 seconds later I get a mouldy smell coming though the vents...after about a minute it goes away.

Anyone else have this? Apart from that, it works a treat, and the reason I have to switch in on and off, is that it gets too cold if you leave it on constantly!

Jim

Jim, try turning the temperature dial a notch higher... You'll find it does wonders in not getting too cold

Cheeky Jim - You can write what you like in here mate.. I haven't smelt anything funny from the vents, but then my sense of smell was pretty much killed when my noise was broken when I was 12.
My wife hasn't mentioned anything unusual.. perhaps she thought it was just me...
I shall mention it next time we go out in the Scooby.

I only tend to use the air con when I first enter the vehicle and it is very hot...
run aircon until vents running cold and we are moving... then switch off (save on fuel and air con maintenace, and gain extra engine power).
Also this time when I left my wife and daughter in the car for 5minutes in the sun left it switched it on then...
But it is not mega hot here yet... then it might be on all the time...but then here in Blighty it never really gets that hot.

Insolating the pipe does sound like a good idea.

Now I know the air con is okay making that noise and dripping I can start using it again and take the car to Subaru for a service and only need to pay an arm, rather than an arm and a leg

Erik,
I find the air-con on my MY99 only average and not as good as my last car or as good as a friend's Fiesta. Let me know how you get on with insulating the pipe.

Done yesterday. It`s really cool ! With insolated pipe it`s possibile run with A/C fan on one step lower. Yesterday /no insol./on 3 after on 2 was more than cool enough. You will notice much faster cooling.

Yeah good idea... any pics or description..

I look under the bonnet and see a stuffed engine bay... where is this pipe...

I guess it must travel into the interior throuhg the bulk head.. I should look more closely.

The pipes on the right hand side (looking at the car from the front) running from the aircon pump (top right front of the engine) to the cockpit.

Put the aircon on, it's the one that's bl dy cold!!
