Audi Quattro - should I be worried????

Hope your mate has deep pockets. Parts can be very pricey and plenty will go wrong at that age.
I know from bitter experience.
I ran a 1993 S2 Estate until last year, when it started to cost mega bucks on reaching 90,000 miles.
It would trail a Scooby in a straight line to 100 mph but with that lurvely flat torque profile, it would start to overhaul it soon after.
On twisty stuff is another matter. Feedback, what feedback? Where are the wheels pointing? No, it was a very typical German car of that age.

I owned a 10V UR Quattro for two years or so before the Impreza. Compaired to the Subaru I didn't spend much on it at all.
It was a '84 2144cc 10V. Fantastic gruff 5 pot growl. Drank oil like it was going out of fashion
Engine needed new valve stem oil seals.
Much better on fuel than my Scoob .circ 25MPG with a 22Gallon (90l) tank !!!
Very well built. Cornered like a barge, but running 1.4 bar of boost with a turbo the size of a dustbin it went like stonk once wound up past the vast lag.
Quite easy to tune, and have huge potential.
Not as rapid off the line as the Subaru ~ but it would still worry most especially when slightly modded or a later 20V turbo engine model.
Drive train was strong....
Turbo's HUGELY expensive, as is any intercooler piping.
Tyres are a strange size something like 215/55/15's or could be 16" if standard Ronal alloys. They were difficult to obtain 3 years ago don't know if things have changed.
Great car ~ sadly missed.

Hi,
A friend has recently bought an Audi Quattro - it's a D reg, the original wide arch shape. It does need some work before he gets it on the road, once he does he has treatened to come Scooby hunting!!
I have a MY00 Turbo, it's standard at the moment but will have 17's + exhaust on soon Should I be worried or has the Quattro had it's day?

No dont be worried.
Most effective quattro of that vintage were S2 and S4 which have 220bhp 2.3 litre straight fives but are v heavy.
Modded road going short wheelbase ur quattro would eat you alive, and just about any other impreza, but you would know those cos they have a square wheelbase and wheeltrack !

A D' plate suggests its a Ur Quattro and if its a 20V then it would be a lot closer than you think! and would probably come down to drivers rather than cars.
Ur Quattro:
220bhp 228lb
0-60 6.2s
1392Kg
Mira Lap (wet) 49.8s
Impreza Turbo
215bhp 214lb
0-60 5.4s
1235Kg
Mira Lap (wet) 49.5s

They are a challenge. I should know - got a 98MY Turbo and my mate has a D plate 10V ur quattro.
Thoughts:
quattro has more cornering grip
Impreza has more straight line speed.
quattro has more torque lower down the revs.
Impreza has slightly more power.
Both are about the same weight.
Very similiar but different cars - one is a Gran Tourer the other is a Japanese Turbo-nutter.
In the end of the day it's more down to the driver than the cars.
Take his quattro for a drive, they are excellent - esp, if they've got a full Scorpion exhaust system I drove my mate's quattro for a few weeks last year when he was unemployed, what a laugh

Don't give him too many ideas about modifying the thing!! Sounds like it's going to be a good fight at the moment
Wonder if I'll be christening the Scooby QK1 (Quattro Killer 1) or he'll be SK1

I owned an H plate 20v S2...loved the car and although the Impreza gives you more guts and feedback, the S2 was alot smoother but still got you there (but not as quickly!!)
Moneywise it cost an absolute fortune to run. What I thought were silly problems i.e. temperature gauge failure, turned out to be £700 in garage bills. They just kept coming.
A friend rebuilt a crash damaged original 10v UR that was running a hybrid turbo, was chipped and was pumping out in excess of 350bhp? It was an absolute beast...it has an electronic display speedo, and boy did those numbers change quickly.....be afraid....I was

Been in a mates S2, and his Torsen Diffed (late 10v UR-Q). Neither had the shove in the back that my old early 10V UR-Q did.
The sound of a high revving 5 pot quattro harks back to the mad mad things they used to rally....
The sight of it rapidly approaching in your rear view mirror is something else to behold. Those flaired arches, wide low stance....
Sigh.......in my moment.....
