The law on this states that the number must be in the most verticle position that it can be on the front of the car, so that the numbers and letters are clearly visible to the front. If you didn't have the bracket then the most verticle place would be on that valance. You would not get any hassle as long as the numbers and letters were correctly spaced and in "normal" format.
Some guy on here offered to do me one but the deals gone cold. As for removing the front plate I think it's just a case of undoing the plastic screws, but i've been told they are very flimsy.
Good Luck

Take a look here (maybe someone could do the link properly?)

This is from Shauns' website (please remove it Shaun if you dont like it - you own the copyright I would suppose)
Just shown to display what a numberplate on the leading edge of the bonnet can look like - not sure about the legal aspects, but Shaun, being so prim and proper on here would NEVER be illegal, surely??

the number plate holder is held on with a bracket
the bracket is attached with wierd star shaped bolts, so i think you have to drill them out...ok
now where can we get the sticky licence plates??

The front number plate bracket is held on with what are called security bolts. You can obtain a kit by Draper which contains all the various types to fit in a 1/2 ratchet from any decent auto accesorie shop as i did.

I think you'll find that the sticky plates are not legal any more.
I tryed to get one at my local motor factors and was informed they had stopped selling them due to new regs. that only allow the use of one style of letters and right spacings. And when you order a replacement plate or set you must show the log book for the for the car and this is recorded.

Reading the site listed above, it seems that as long as you have printed on the number plate the name, trademark or other identifier of the company who made the numberplate + post code, and the BS AU 145d number printed on the number plate , and it meets the reflectivity requirements listed, it should be legal.
Can some one print out (on a stick on strip) my company name + post code and BS AU 145d so I can stick/laminate it to the stick-on I bought ????
