Default Temp gauge

Hi all
Got an issue with my son's wrx
On the motorway journeys the temp gauge rises to the red. The only way it will come down is to have the revs above 3000 rpm and then it drops.
It's had a new rad in the past but made no difference.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Possibly a failing water pump. Genuine Subaru ones are usually bullet proof but aftermarket ones the impeller is known to slip.
