Default Fluctuating temp gauge

Hi all
My sons blob eye WRX has developed a problem
When driving the temp gauge fluctuates up and down
When it goes up to just above the 3/4 area if you hold the revs up or whilst driving drop it down a gear and accelerate the temp drops down. Any ideas ???
Thanks in advance

First thing i would check is that you have the rad caps the right way round and they are sealing.

Thanks Matt for getting back to me.
I haven't touched the rad caps since he's owned it only to check level on the tank on top engine.
The rad cap on the tank on the engine is a normal style rad cap.
The one on the rad is just round with no tabs to twist it.
That was what it was like when he purchased it.
I'll do some research into this. It's very strange but never goes into the red

that's correct for the caps, given the cost of them i would replace them in the first instance. Thermostats can become sticky and air locks are not uncommon.

The standard gauge is pretty much useless for seeing what's going on with the temp unfortunately.

Standard gauge is literally "Below Temp", "At Temp", "Above Temp".
