Default Avcs not working

On my Impreza 2003 UK Sti, I have no boost leaks but over the last few weeks I have noticed increased turbo lag. I think the AVCS is not working (not making the usual on cam noise and sluggish low down) as once boost hits the car is ok. Could it be the filters in the banjo bolts before I remove them. As am I correct Subaru removed these on 05 cars due to this problem? Or am I wasting my time?

regards Adrian

I removed mine as the thimble filters had worked their way down blocking the flow of oil.

It was making a clicking noise when i revved between 1 and 2000rpm when stationery so i searched and searched and eventually found an answer on nasioc.
I was already in a high state of paranoia after engine tuner blew up my first paul finch build they buzzed it and bent 16 valves.

I am not surprised you were paranoid after that!!!!

Does anyone have a diagram of there location - especially the passenger side as I cannot for the life of me see it!!!

Are they easy to remove ?

Thanks Don!!! If they are blocked am I correct that it could cause issues with the AVCS not working correctly?

The neutral position switch on the back of the gearbox can also stop avcs from working and is an easy test. Simply pin the plug to bridge the connection to simulate the car being in gear and drive it.

Depending on year the switch works backwards to this, just make sure.

you need to actually log it via some form of 'live data' as "seat of the pants" is generally a poor diagnostic tool.............

Thank you all for the help and advice. Am going to remove the bolts today and check the screens and see if anything changes. Does anyone recommend an app to live data log before so anything else. I have a wireless OBD conector and dash command that I use to reset codes but not sure if that is good enough??

regards

Ok - got the passenger one out - the filter looks like new but have removed it anyway. Cannot see how I am going to check the other side - see pic below - pipe running across the top!!

There are 2 banjo bolts in that area. One feelds oil to the cams and AVCS. The other feeds water to the turbo. Don't mix them up. A previous engine builder did just that on my 08 STI. The turbo ran hot and cooked the seals. The one for the oil with the filter has a circular lump on the top.
