Default Road tax £695

I saw the DVLA's new prices today, my 2007 STI Spec D will be £695 a year from 1st April 2023.
Hmm, this could spell my last year of ownership
The way I see it is it's nearly £60 a month for road tax alone, it's a toy not a daily....

I wonder sometimes though if I'd have the car stuck up my ar$e sideways if I go to sell it as the road tax would put off a lot of potential buyers....
It's immaculate and forged etc. 106k miles now lol

It's crazy, totally unfair for enthusiasts who in reality are not using the cars that much, they want them off the road for good.

100%
It hit me today right in the gut. If I use it say 5 times a month, that's around £12 in road tax....per drive.
She may have to go, but not sure anyone would buy it to be honest, but I've been struggling to justify the road tax on it for a few years now. I'm 48 in May, kinda feeling done with it all to be honest.

I've also got a 54 plate Passat 1.9TDi and an X reg Golf Mk4 1.9TDi, both of them TOGEHTER are cheaper per year to tax. I'd have enough money left over for a tank of diesel / around 450+ miles, that's a road trip from here to Edinburgh to put it into perspective.

It takes the **** really, my 06 hawk wrx is probably around the same, haven't checked to be honest, we're paying as much as those ppl who drive round in Range Rovers/ Landrovers and use um as daily drivers doing the bloody school run and the shopping, im much the same as you and only use mine a few times a month and like you said beginning to wonder if it's actually worth keeping it now long term

If mine was an 06 Spec D the tax would be around half....it changed some time in March 06...after that....death by road tax.

23rd of March if I remember correctly as my old spec D was an early one (press car) and was the cheaper tax

anyone wanting a new car that doesnt want to pay big tax needs to be looking at the 2017 to 2018 models which had the random road tax cost of £140 (now 165) per year (late sti are this) compared to the 695

You can even get a 5.0 v8 mustang of same year on that tax rate

All these inconsistencies need to be sorted out. should be purely on emmissions and usage.

Crazy.

https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/cheap-road-tax/

At least my classic is only going up a tad. One thing you could do is pay monthly and just tax when you plan on using it. Great for if you only use in winter.

So my xfr is going up to 695 per year, you know what I honestly don't give 2 ****s, it's £5 per month more than what I pay now and if that's all it costs for me to carry on enjoying my car then they can have the £5 extra.
Anything is better than being forced to drive something you dont want to.
**** em they are not forcing me out of my pride & joy.
Power to the people and all that 😀

Its irrelevant about how often you drive it, I'm afraid. I traded in my remapped 280bhp Audi tdi quattro daily driver last year which averaged 42mpg and put the £50 odd a month tax towards a used 290bhp diesel hybrid AWD Volvo which averages 72mpg and remains £0 road tax.

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and play with the rules as they are. It's nuts that my Impreza classic is half the tax my Audi was...

I wonder if there's a way of getting that price down, as in reducing the engine size? Sure i saw a HMRC application. May reduce the class.

There's one plus side to tax increase, they haven't added the 5p litre back into fuel, so surely that saving will out with the extra cost of car tax.

No intention of getting rid of the car. I just think that as VED is based on emissions it's logical that usage should be the main driver of the cost.

The fact it does not, proves they are not really bothered about emissions, only about money.

Yes, no doubt that's why it's not been done.

Obvious answer is to roll it into fuel duty, but other issues i guess.

This is the precise reason why I have not and never will own a UK Hawk/hatch. There's no doubt this also puts off potential buyers too.
In comparison I think my 05 spec c is around £270 a year

Although in the grand scheme of things and considering all other costs involved in owning a Subaru the road tax difference between a UK and JDM car is only £1 per day, £700 seems a ridiculous amount; we are still better off than other countries though (e.g. Ireland or Greece).

I was watching Harry's Garage earlier, when he was revisiting the RS6 Avant (4F model 08/09) and it was doing 13mpg at best. Same road tax !
