Default Turbo rebuild vs replacing the cartridge myself?

As per my other thread I'm after a new turbo, I found a cheap one that's F@£$D from the USA a VF46 sold as ''for parts not working'' with lots of shaft play...

A standard rebuild from turbo dynamics costs = ''standard rebuilds start at £195.00 + VAT per unit and this includes stripping down and cleaning the unit, we replace piston rings, thrust and journal bearings as standard''

Can I just buy a Mellett CHRA and replace it myself ? Is it hard to do ? they cost about 150 ish and be better off? And also buy a new oil feed line....Or am I missing something big here, will it need re-balancing testing etc?

If you buy the full chra you will only need to fit the housings, and it should come balanced from mellet.

I bought the bearings, seals etc (from Mellet) and did a hybrid conversion myself (turbine from mellet, comp wheel from Kinugawa), and I’ve not had any issues to date, but YMMV.

Also mine was a td series turbo, which may be easier to rebuild than a vf.

but then it’s also a question of “is it worth 100 or so to get a warranty?”

Yeah you're probably right about the warranty...

Thanks a lot guys is it worth getting flexible oil feed lines ? I thik I'll try and do it myself I'll e-mail AET for a quote also see what they'll say...

EDIT: I just got a £350 - £400 + VAT quote from Turbo Dynamics for a new CHRA ....time to get my hands dirty I guess

EDIT 2: And got a £495 - £595 from AET....

I wanted to convert my turbo to TD04 19T but would need new chra and front housing I believe, once factored in those parts, the price difference was £100 for a company to do this for you while basically fully refurbing your turbo.
