Hi all,

2007 STi gold Brembo's (rear)
I noticed over the weekend that my rear Brembo's have small amounts of corrosion.

I painted on some clear lacquer after rubbing the areas down a bit, but what can I use that offers further corrosion protection? Bearing in mind they are alloy calipers....

Areas were bubbled, and when I rubbed off the gold paint / corrosion, it was like a white dust.

Luckily it's on the inner side of the calipers, near where the mounting bolts go in...so it doesn't have to look pretty as such....

strangely hammerite do a gold paint , how close to brembo colour i don’t know , worth a rub down in situ and painting some on just for longer term protection , it’s just aluminium oxide so a version of rust , and it’s a common issue 👍

May have to be black hammerite from memory in the garage lol
I've got 4 new mounting bolts coming from Alyn at AS...he's such a great guy to deal with.

My old bolts were playing with the idea of rounding off, so they will be in the bin soon...they just don't know it yet

A work as a spray painted and I have been meaning to spectro the calipers and get a paint mixed. If and when over next week or so can do it and do a spray out for people.

If I have a code then can mix up ( needs sprayed not brushed on) or nip via dingbro and get it mixed

I'm sure that would be very popular if the colour match is spot on, also in a touch up stick would sell well!

I believe Humbrol do an enamel model paint which is an exact match, it's Humbrol 54 metallic brass. Very cheap too! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231388589941

You probably need to use an etch primer also, unless the humbrol is self etching and self priming, otherwise it will likely come off again after a short while.

Hi All! On the subject of etch primer, does anyone know if its possible to buy a tin (not an aerosol) of the stuff, so it can be brushed on?... and if yes... , from where?, Thanks!

The smallest tin of primer I could get was 250ml from Homebase. It's called "Special Metals Primer" and is a Hammerite product. Not sure if it's an etch primer as such, but should at least seal up the bare alloy of the caliper and starve the corrosion of oxygen.

Seems to be holding up after a couple of winters but I did use a spray gun, not a brush.

Need to be careful with that as Humbrol's enamel so most normal clears will react with it.

It'll craze/wrinkle if you use anything acrylic etc on top of it. Best thing is to just leave it uncoated as it is essentially a one coat product, albeit not a particularly tough one.

I painted some Humbrol on an old white painted shelf bracket, I had cleaned it first with IPA.
After the Humbrol dried, I sprayed it with Hycote clear lacquer aerosol....within moments some of the Humbrol had reacted, wrinkled...almost like a paint stripper effect.

I'll either not lacquer the Humbrol, or get something else as a final coat after priming. May just prime the corroded areas and go down the Stonechip route and leave as is. I can hand paint that on pretty thick, and it's fairly durable.

As said, the corroded areas aren't huge, and luckily are on the inside half of the caliper so nothing will show.

Yep, been there and done that with the lacquer over enamel thing which is why I mentioned it. A childhood of building Airfix and Tamiya models taught me that, the first time to rather devastating consequences after I painstakingly painted a model the best I ever had and then thought I'd protect it with lacquer. Big mistake!

Hycote wheel lacquer is also enamel, and crap. Again, made that mistake. And also Simoniz 'Tough' spray is enamel too. You can overpaint with other enamels but not acrylic (i.e most auto sprays).

One thing that might be worth doing if anyone is in the Hull area, or has a caliper off the car, is to go/send to Paints4u as they have the photo spectrometer which can match paint. It might not be perfect but it'll be pretty close. They did that for me with paint match and actually found that on my 22G the closest colour is a Maserati blend of Rosso Corsa, rather than the original shade of 22G. If you explain that a lot of people would likely buy this paint for refurbs and touch ups (or like me you buy a lot of stuff from them) then they'll waive the normal fee for matching the colour too.
