Default 02 WRX Engine Upgrade

Hello. I am somewhat new to Subarus (had an 02 WRX for ~1yr). I love this car and am always impressed with what it can do along with the fun factor of it. at any rate, last night my fun came to a rough ending. Looks like my engine is now toast. There are tons of options and information that I have been reading and tracing down for which direction to go next. I have a limited budget and want to get the best bang for my buck to make more power (350-400hp whp) reliably. Is there such a thing? Yes, i know that there are a tons of information however, some of it seems conflicting and overwhelming to decipher. I am somewhat mechanically minded and can wrench on things. I wouldn't attempt to build these engines after reading some horror stories but, could do most short block up build fairly comfortably. Budget ~$3000

Options considering:
  1. New EJ205 2.0 short block
  2. New EJ257 Short Block Hybrid (use my old heads after getting them checked)
  3. JDM EJ205
  4. JDM EJ207 (Seems expensive)
  5. Junkyard EJ205
  6. Junkyard EJ257

I'm looking for real world opinions from folks that have either of the above options or other options that have worked well and that I can do myself is greatly appreciated.

But if you're building it then you can go a better spec then the JDM engines. I know in the States the ej25 to ej20 heads with slight machine work is very popular. You could do that but I would recommend building that block up.

Speak to a reputable engine builder mate. Don't just go for the local one near you but look at some one like engine tuner in Plymouth.
