The version numbers were brought in for rally homologation purposes, I guess Subaru phased that out after the classics as it was no longer required.

Correct ,It was owners of the GD models that continued using the term "Version" 7/8/9 etc..."myself included" but Subaru officially ended with the version-6 GC8 model before the GD design cars came out Bug/Blob/Hawk Eye etc...SJ.

is that why all of the grpN cars from Prodrive continued with the JDM numbering system implemented by STi??

the only thing that makes a nonsense is people (including Subaru dealers) making up any old rubbish with no apparent understanding of the reasons behind the STi set-up............

its far easier anyhows to refer to all models by their production Model Year as that correctly ID's what they are regardless of when registered

on an 05 plate you most likely have a late registered MY04 narrow track car (N10) - the model code found on the NSF strut top VIN plate would confirm

Official. Subaru stopped branding their STI cars as 'versions' after the V6.

if its a Blob wide-track then its an MY05 car (N11 if you follow the grpN numbering)
