Definitive info required re 2005 STI shocks
Hi all,
After some advice please.
I have a 2005 Blob STI on 39k miles which has developed the rumble/knock noise at low speed due to sticking shocks. I’ve read on here that this is a common fault with their design and expected it sooner or later.
I did a bit of research and was told that the closest to stock STI would be to replace with the KYB SR Ultras.
The knock is just coming from the fronts but I assume that I’d need to replace all 4?
Are the Ultra SRs generally ok or could you recommend a better alternative (it’s not tracked so don’t need them any stiffer than OEM).
Happy New Year and many thanks in advance!

Thanks Joe. Are these the ExcelG variant? It looks that way from the picture but the description lists various models.
I was advised that the UltraSR are the better direct replacement for the STI shocks but if the Excels are recommended I will look into them.

is the issue not a tube within a tube , i thought some one posted about removing the original sti shocks and re greasing the tube , i think they put an extra bleed nipple in , then job done

There is a modification that can be done to prevent/mask knocking shocks which involves drilling and tapping a grease nipple into the bushing area of the shock. But once they are knocking they are worn so your only masking the original problem. Ideally new shocks and do the mod to prevent/prolong the wear/problem in the first place.

As far as I know you can't get kyb replacement front shocks for the 2005 (114.3 pcd) onwards sti Impreza, unfortunately only subaru branded ones (which are kyb ironically). The kyb rears will fit from the earlier 2001-2004 (100pcd) sti.
It's strange for the fronts to go as it's usually the rears due to the bearing/inverted design.
I changed mine a few years back and had to use rb320 fronts (they were cheap at the time) and kyb sr ultra on the rears.
Hope this helps,
Chris.
