We are off on our annual road trip from Land's End to Edinburgh, and will be stopping off at friends in Holmfirth. After this we would like to take a route through the Dales, preferably B roads and scenic, but as confirmed southwesterners we know nothing, except a detour to Sedbergh last year. I'd prefer to avoid large town areas and don't mind heading east or west side up to Scotland.
Any advice, and info on vpower/momentum much appreciated. Thanks.
From Holmfirth head through Bradford and across to Menston. To Burley in Wharfdale, then Ilkley, then take the B6160 up through Bolton abbey, Grassington, up to Hawes, then onto the NE for the rest of your trip.
That’s just one option - so many good roads in the dales.
Have a good trip👍

Thanks for that, sounds good. I guess it's all pretty good, being God's country. We are staying at Litton on the way back, coming in from the west, so that would be ideal.
I might have to detour to Keighley; I've heard there's some cars to look at there.

I'm 20mins from Holmfirth if you want to call in for a brew on the way up

That would be excellent if we are on time; I was looking at coming cross country from Stoke to Buxton and on to Glossop . Is that practical? It has the benefit of Shell away from the motorway.

Setting off late next week; Bristol to see lass, diving into the Peak district to Holmfirth, then Dales if I can manage to get round Bradford, up to Edinburgh, possibly A1 but prefer the quieter west route. Back down right into the Dales again, then Bristol again, back to Lands End.
Is it frosty up there anywhere yet? Still on summer tyres!!

Yes its now frosty up there now.... Loch ness ….. a mate lives up there and remarked on a hard frost last week.
The fog just cleared enough for the photos.....before the rain started.
Great roads , but surfaces really poor in Staffordshire, clearly because the money has been spent on speed cameras every 400m. Approaching Leek, I've never seen so many, but half have hedges growing in front of them, so I guess not in use.
100mm of rain, and possible snow on high ground expected today, still on summer tyres, so taking it steady.
Had a great tour with friends round the moors above Holmfirth yesterday afternoon, very beautiful, stunning roads, but busy as.
Been through the Scottish Borders today, then the Northumbria National park, then Northern Pennines, now back in the Dale's....all cracking places, but the Dales take some beating
I've got to admit, I did jet wash it in Galashiels; it was like snow foam!
We don't have much gritting down west, and I got paranoid about the salt in Scotland, Northumberland and the Dale's.
Back home after 1250 odd miles to the normal storms and rain, summer well gone now.
What a beautiful island we live on though, loved it.
