Default Advice needed - Water temp goes high when stationary

I left my car running for 5 mins earlier ,when I got back in, the temp gauge was near the top (usually in the middle). I drove steady and the temp came down within a minute or so.
what can cause it?
I didn't hear the fan running, how do I check that it works?
Or could it be the water pump?
Thanks for any advice 👍🏻

Mine did this before, turned out the coolant was leaking out of the rad bottom hose, temp shot up when sat at some
traffic lights, dropped back down when i got moving again, luckily i was not far from home, have you checked the coolant level?

Nice one, I've just checked it and it was low 👍🏻
I put about 1.5 litres in. I haven't checked for leaks yet, I'll have a look next time I go out 👍🏻

No worries, I actually thought that the head gasket was on the way out again on mine so I was quite relieved
when I found out what it was, main dealer had fitted me a Mishimoto rad and it can't have been right since
then, they actually diagnosed the problem and did me a coolant change for free as an apology.
