*Warning* Extreme whinging and moaning...

Last year I posted on here saying i was searching for a Classic Type R..Anyway, i gave up looking in the end....More nails than the hardware dept of B&Q...

Recently i got the itch again and started looking...sooOOOoo, i'm back to the drawing board..They're all over priced sheds...again..

Is it because they're now an old car and have been thrashed to death, rotted to pieces etc and/or are people hanging onto the good ones??

There's a couple i've seen online (that i haven't viewed in person) that are around or above £20k...This was the dilemma I had last year..For that money i can build one from a shell...

I've literally driven from one end of the country to the other...I think I'll give up..
Anyway, moan over..

Probably a mixture of all the above.

I keep an eye out for type r's for sale and check prices as I own one myself and you'll often see the same ones readvertised,so it makes you wonder if the higher prices are being paid for them.

I can't see them being worth 20k even as a low mileage stock car.

With the massive variations in prices you see in adverts I wouldn't have a clue where to price mine if I were to sell it.

last year i made lots of enquiries about importing one..LOTS of enquiries...It was a bit of a minefield and I eventually lost interest tbh...i looked at numerous cars last year, but eventually got fed up with the false advertising...'excellent' and 'pristine' are two words over used....excellent apparently means interior trim tatty and hanging off, drill holes everywhere and orange peel in the paint..but maybe that's just me being picky..
I've even seen a few cars online that i viewed last August still up for daft money and unsold...They were nails, or very, very average...
I bought an E46 M3 (over rated) last summer just to get behind the wheel of something tasty..I sold it after 4 months..It was boring.
The variation in prices is very broad, but so is the quality of the cars offered...My preferance is for a blue one...I'll probably do a repeat of last year...keep half an eye out and then lose interest again and get something else..rinse, repeat!

Why does it have to be a type-r? A sorted classic should drive similar, and there's lots more of them so you might be able to find one that isn't a dog.

Sounds like you want a mint Type R but you don’t want to pay it’s market value. A really nice imported one will be £20k.

There’s no logical reason why they should be cheaper than a P1, so it looks like the market has finally realised this.

I guess you have to pay up, or stop looking.

My advice would be to import one via one of the import places, this is what i am doing as the quality of cars in japan is much better and the most important thing is no rust.

you sound as fussy as me and i have turned down many cars which other people may not have, its a very long game though so try not to give up

And i think 20k is way too much for a type r unless it is near show room condition

Yes I bought it, lol. Stunning example and it’s changed an awful lot already, for the better may I add . Currently having plenty done at TD Racing

That dreadful body kit and steering wheel and gauges have been removed, brand new stunning refurbed Rays waiting to go it too.

I feel your pain , I've done the very exact thing. Drove hours up and down the country looking at honest , clean , straight rust free cars and two from dealers that come up with good reviews on this site , and they where all junk, rust is rust no mattter what state it's in , sick of hearing it's just a little surface rust - there's less rust on the titanic than the car infront of me , all I wanted was a clean classic and had a 10k budget , most imports in my bracket had crash history ,
one dealer said to me you wount find a car this old with out some form of paint I replied yes I get that but these two "honest" cars your showing me have filler in them making them unhonest cars .
try find a very good importer and go look st there current stock to see what there bringing in, do not go off pictures I've learnt that

I'm so glad you guys aren't flaming me for being fussy...Today i went to see another Type R..I was very nice..Highly modified, but all good mods but there were a couple of issues i needed to address in my mind..The first was the V5 stated the car was an Impreza GL which concerned me regarding insurance. The second was it had been resprayed..not a bad job but not the best..there was a fair bit of overspray here and there and Im always worried about what's underneath a respray..They are 20 years old...It also had a very impressive engine rebuild but no paperwork whatsoever..Plus there were the usual things i'd want to get sorted..We agreed a price but i just needed to think a little longer before pulling the trigger..In the meantime another buyer bought it..That's how it goes...I was aware that another buyer was coming to view the car, but that sort of pressure makes me more reluctant to buy rather buy in haste (been there, done that)...
I wouldn't mind a properly modded one just to get more value for money..ie big brakes, power, map etc but it's entirely different mine field of considerations...

QUESTIONS:

What do you lads think about resprays??

What are your thoughts on modded vs bone stock??

I also think I'm leaning away from the various blues (shock horror) and towards.....GREY!!!

Beautiful condition there mate..If it was a Type R i'd be punching my keyboard..
Even the advertised price doesn't seem to horrendous.

It’s better than a TYPE-R I’ve owned one,

Thanks for your kind words too.

Insurance is no problem at all. My WRX is registered as a GL and all you do is tell the insurance company what it actually is. No point getting quotes from comparison sites though obviously.

Paint wise - unless they’ve been garaged all their lives, paint fade will mean most will have had some new paint anyway. Take a magnet and check for filler.

Mods - I would want high quality items with receipts on a car of this value. Re-map by a well respected mapper also a must.

As for the one you saw with an engine build, but no receipt.... I’d be running a mile. If you spend £5k or whatever on a quality build, you’d make damn sure you kept proof for re-sale of the car.

Pretty much on point with these comments,

fine as long as it's had decent respray. My old one was a solid shell and no rust underneath but as said above had heavily faded in the sun, had a full respray and looked brand new when it sold on.

Mod's wise, as said reciepts of what and when (no good having a new turbo if was mapped 6 months later)and by who.

Engine rebuild no receipt/no info then assume its not been done or bodge job so expect it will need to be done in short order. Being sold because its know to be gonna need doing soon? If they say who's built it, give that company a ring, most reputable tuners will verify what was done etc

There isn't an appropriately sexual emoji available from the menu...

It couldn't look sexier even if it was in heels with a g-string up it's splitter..

Great post..
I had no problem getting quotes from specialists on classic policies...
Re: the engine work..i DID walk away yesterday...The mechanicals appeared to be done to a very high standard but the combination of everything you said made me hesitate...I woke up this morning with a sense of relief not regret..
The fact i was dilly dallying tells me that deep down my instincts were saying NO..It's very easy to become seduced by lots of under bonnet bling, FMIC's, pipe work whoosing and choo choo noises, and lose sight of what's right FOR ME...I'm 47 ffs..Ok, i've never grown up but i still want something that looks semi sensible but is discreetly bonkers.
