Default Work Shop Pricing - cambelt change

Hi guys

I need to get timing belt changed and having checked around, the prices are so different. Any ideas why someone like Subaru4You can charge around £170 whilst other independent garages are £300-400.....and I'm guessing Subaru dealer will be £500+.

The belts can be had for less than £100 so is it really that much labour cost to get it installed? I'm no greasemonkey so will not do it myself but wondering if its simple enough for an average mechanic to install it.

Depends what you have done... belt, pulleys, water pump and tensioner will be north of £200 alone...

The kit is price varies depending on if it includes rollers and water pump, up to a max of about £150 if memory serves. ICP (import car parts) have a good website if you want to check prices.
Then I think it's probably about 2 1/2 hours labour.
Personally I'd go for a subaru specialist. On my old wrx wagon the previous belt change (prior to my ownership) had not been done correctly. The belt guide had been adjusted so it was rubbing on the cambelt. The guide had got so hot it burnt off the anodising, the belt had a groove worn in the top and was cracking in places.

Sorry to hear that mate. I agree it makes sense to go to a specialist as the money spent for a proper job more than makes up for the problems associated with a half-baked job.

I hope to find an option by this weekend. So far in terms of specialists, Extreme Scoobies and Scoobyworld seem to be the most competitive in terms of price and distance for me. Unfortunately Subaru4you is a couple of hours each way at least

If anyone has any suggestions then they would be hugely appreciated - I am located in East London

Subaru4you would charge based on experience ,their prices are usually ex vat. A non specialist garage would be a book price. I'd go with Subaru4you for piece of mind.

I totally agree go with a specialist , the tensioner is in my books is a must to change when it’s done , ive not had a water pump done as i heard pretty reliable mileage dependant and if rollers are not much do them too , after all it’s not for another 5 years unless you do lots of miles
