Driving back home along the A331 between Camberley and Aldershot on Saturday lunchtime, driving along the inside lane just before my exit at about 65 - 70 mph. In front of me was a red G reg Seat Ibiza driving in the outside lane doing about 80. All of a sudden something detaches itself from the Seat and flies 40 ft up in the air. I then realise that it is the rear pop out window common to all 3 door hatchbacks. Just then it comes back down to earth and shatters all over the road just in front of me so that glass flies all over the bottom of the Scoob. I get back home and remarkably have no new stone chips!

Anyone else had anything similar?

P.S. The Seat driver didn't even slow down, nothing. Couldn't even have noticed!

No, but something similar happened on 24 December 1987, when the rear screen of my Golf GTI fell off the back of the car (it was being transported at the time after being shortened on the M25 - I was the meat in the guy behind's sandwich).

I pointed out to the driver of the truck that it was only hanging on by the heater wires, but he said it would be OK.

A nasty surprise for someone following when it eventually fell off, in one piece.

A few years ago I was driving north in heavy traffic on the M1 in lane 2. I heard a V loud bang and watched a rear tyre on an artic trailer explode. The complete length of tread hit the road in front of my car and then flyover the roof to land in the central reservation.

Having just missed 6ft of steel belted rubber coming in through the window and chopping my head off I stopped at the next services and had a cuppa.

Following a builders truck down a twisty Somerset road I have been face to face with a piece of 8x4 chipboard, blowing off the back

But - not as bad as a work colleague who had a car written off when a truck for a well known builders merchant dumped his whole load of timber all over the front. The truck driver was exiting the roundabout too fast as my colleague was approaching. The whole load lurched and snapped the ropes - BANG!

1. On the motorway, travelling in the opposite direction I saw the bonnet of a Cortina flip up and smash into it's windscreen. Nasty.

2. on the motorway, I passed a RangeRover just as it burst into flames on the hardshoulder. Nice "bang" sound.

3. On the motorway, a 6ft x 6ft sheet of metal comes flapping off the back of a lorry, and takes out my nearside wing. t'was on my Mk2 Escort, so no major ££ damage

4. On the motorway, I see a fiesta a hundred yards ahead of me, swerve, hit the central reservation and then back into the side of a lorry, jamming itself under the side rails (between axles).. thank god for those rails.

Don't even get me started on my aeroplane incidents (having done UK->Switzerland round trip over 200 times)

Last year I was driving down the M80 back from my dealear. It was a glorious day, the sun splitting the trees and I just had some nice new colour coded splash gaurds fitted and the dealer did a great job valetting the car.

Next thing I know is some prat in front of me has ran over a road sign which then flies up in the air heading straight for my shiny car.

Luckily I managed to avoid major damage, but the bloody thing put a 6-inch scratch in my front bumper. Sometimes life just ain't fair and I hadn't even gone 10 miles from the dealer.

And usually when this happens, your in the outside lane with great big trucks on your inside, so you can't even avoid hitting the things.

If I were you I'd go buy a lottery ticket for tomorrow night.

Had to avoid a 2-door wardrobe some wazuk had strapped onto the top of his car once on the M25, closely followed by the matching chest-of-draws half a mile later.

Maybe he didn't know that stuff comes in a flat-pack, I think it went home fairly flat though.

...going down the (?)A13 to Sarfend in my open top Triumph Vitesse (that dates me) doing about 60mph - flatbed truck in front with two railway sleepers on the flatbed, until he hits a pot-hole in the road; one railway sleeper bounces off the back of the truck, hits the road end-on in front of me and bounces staight OVER my car.

... they didn't sell lottery tickets in those days, otherwise I would have bought several.

Had to avoid a trailor that had its towball break once. To55er wasnt using any chains for backup in case the ball breaks so the trailor went cartweeling down the road in front of me....It crossed to the other lane but luckily no one was coming the other way.
