Smile Back! It's been a long long time !

To start off, apologies for the long post, it's been a while and i'm excited

I've been on here since the early days, check in every now and again but last posted in 2009. It appears I registered as Avalyn in 2004 but was on here as Doofus before that - I'm guessing around 2002 when I bought my first Scooby. It was a year old 2000 UK Turbo Wagon in Deep Blue Mica. I needed a bigger car as my daughter was about to be born and I needed the space for buggies and all the shiz that accompanies a small child. I had a happy 3 1/2 years with that car

It started standard, but ended up mildy modded with a decat downpipe, H&S backbox, dawes device, component speakers, kenwood head unit, colour coded side skirts and a wee boost gauge. It never failed to start or get me anywhere and I have very happy memories of hooning around Scotland with it. It's the car my daughter came home in from the hospital. I clearly remember my first full bore launch thinking f me, that can't be allowed. It would probably seem tame now but back then it was so so much quicker than anything else in the same price bracket.

Traded it in for a new 2005 WRX wagon in WR Blue. Should have bought a red one I had PPP added shortly after. Definitely a more grown up car that the classic but not sure I loved it as much. Still it lasted 2 1/2 years until I drove down to Litchfield to trade it for a Foz STi Black with the performance pack (running @330/330). What a hoot. Circumstances changed though and I moved house and started to walked to work. So paying £300 a month+ tax + insurance for a car to sit on a driveway seemed a bad idea. So I sold up. I can still remember thinking, hmmm, as the back end of it burbled down the street. Bollocks, should have kept that one

From then (couldn't do without a car) I've had (deep breath) an E46 330D manual coupe (remapped), Audi S3 (8P - remapped), divorce, 2011 Mini JCW, Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder, X5 3.0 SD, remarried, 2013 Mini JCW, Mk 1 Audi TT (coilovers + Milltek + remap), Audi S3 (8V), Porsche Boxster S 987.2 PDK to my current F30 BMW 335i auto saloon.

The RS60 Sypder lasted longest, then some of them have lasted 18 months (JCW, S3), one only 3 weeks! (X5) but none of them have ever gotten under my skin like the Scoobies. I swing back and forward between buying older cars (cheaper) and then thinking f it - I work hard and can afford it so get something new and shiny. I'd just like to find a car I call my own, and not be on Autotrader the week after it appears in the driveway

So I'm going back, old school, and I've done it all wrong !

I've bought an unseen, silver, chocolate engined 2.5 STi hawkeye from the wrong end of the country. It's standard, done @50K miles, FSH (dealer + specialist) and hopefully once delivery can be arranged I'll have it in 2 weeks. The BMW is going in the other direction, and the STi + cash is coming my way

The dealer appears honest (he's been in business about 15 years, and usually has a mix of performance cars - they've an RB320 in just now). I enquired about the RB and the STi, and he was honest enough to say the STi was in better condition and offer a trade in + cash my way, rather than the RB320 as a straight swap.

I know all about the 2.5 ringland and piston issues. I was blissfully unaware of them when I had the Foz STi, so I'm not going to let it spoil the experience. If it breaks I'll get it rebuilt with forged pistons, cosworth head gasket etc. I have a slush fund in the bank for when it goes.

I mean the 330D was supposed to blow up because of plastic swirl flaps, both JCW's were supposed to get the rattle of death with timing chain issues, the RS60 Spyder was only supposed to go a mile or two before exploding due to bore score/oval pistons/IMS/RMS and a 16K bill, the TT was supposed to go through more oil than fuel

I'll get an oil/filter change done when I get it, and have it thoroughly checked over. I'll warm it up before thrashing it, cool it down after a hoon, use Shell Optimax and treat it with some respect. I have no plans for engine mods albeit apart from an already acquired H&S backbox for a bit of noise. If it blows I'll do downpipe + fuel pump + remap as it gets rebuilt. We have some good specialists up in Scotland.

I have a small list of things to do to it - backbox, oil temp and boost gauge, and I'll replace the front speakers and get an Apple CarPlay headunit. I'm planning on rear parking sensors as I can't remember the last car that didn't have them (Foz probably). That's about it really. It's still on the standard 17's with good tyres but I'll replace them with winters later on this year, and then buy some 18's so I have a set I can swap back and forward. It'll be better than the BMW in the snow up here in Aberdeen lol.

Never thought I'd be back on Scoobynet, hopefully this place is as friendly as it used to be as for the STi I cannot wait to hear that flat four burble into life. Magic.

Welcome back !

You'll be lucky to run it on Shell Optimax these days (but we all know you really mean Shell V Power Nitro).

After much reading about head gasket issues and ringland failures on the 2.5, I opted for a Hawkeye WRX as my daily driver - it has slightly different pistons to the Sti, and with it being a 2007, it also has the redesigned head-gasket, so hopefully I'm not on as much borrowed time, but who knows.

I did start a thread to encourage positive feedback about the 2.5 lump as all we tend to hear about are the horror stories:

Enjoy it is all I will say.
