Default 2.5ltr Engine - tales of success ?

As we are all too aware, the failures of the 2.5 ltr engine are well documented but not so much the tales of success.

I thought it might be interesting to hear from anyone out there whose 2.5 ltr engine is still going strong on original internals, and what (if anything) has been done to the car by way of additional mods (uprated turbo, remap etc).

Was on 35k, no mods. Had it for a year, didn't drink a single drop of oil or coolant, absolute dream. Was so quiet aswell.

2006 2.5 STI PPP now done 90k on original internals and head gaskets.
Used as my daily driver and gets quite a hard time but still going strong.

Only 17k done in my 64 plate WRX STi, no engine issues at all. Had a dealer 340 remap in the last 1000, love it.
Still pulls strong and willing to please, which it does, although is slightly deafening now.

(Cue, the fat one to come and troll this thread, even though he doesn't own one, and never will because they are so pump, apparently).

And that's the point of this thread really, to gain a different perspective on the 2.5 ltr. Whilst it won't necessarily change some folks' views, it will allow others to see that it's not all doom n gloom.

My 2.5L 2006 Hawk WRX has been running 334/381 now for the last 30k miles & 5 years with no issues at all on it's original standard engine. Car is my every day car (or was till I bought the FSTI a couple of months back). The Impreza has now covered 73k miles in total and I've owned it since nearly new. It's massively over serviced too if that helps!

My FSTI 2.5 is still going strong too. I have double the worry!

My Hawk STI is running 353/400 mapped nearly 4 years ago with Ecutek Race-Rom
Serviced to the book with intermediate oil changes done by myself on 45k at the moment

And hopefully get me to Le-Mans next week

Subscribed, so I can keep try tabs and keep this on topic

Report the posts if it goes awry in my absence.

I do think with a sensible map tweek for the piston issues and using only Subaru branded coolant with a vacuum filler to prevent gasket corrosion and air locks this engine can be ok, or at least on par with a open deck 2.0.

Ringland piston failures aside, the 2.5 does have another issue of head gasket failure due to poorly torqued heads from the factory. This is a known issue that it lifts heads under boost and promote head gasket failure. As a multiple 2.5 owner, I'd say the 2.0 is still a stronger engine, but I much prefer the torque of the 2.5 and the way it drives as an every day car. I just live with the fear of failure and will rebuild when this happens.

Think I hold the record.
2006 Hawk wrx, completely standard when I got it.
238,000 miles on original engine, headgaskets, CLUTCH. Only ever serviced at Subaru
Remapped it standard, then again at 240k with a vf23 and decat and only then did the clutch start slipping in 5th. Engine compression etc was perfect when I sold it.

The guy I got it off did nearly 1/4 million miles in his previous 4 cars. Lived in Cardiff and worked at DVLA Swansea. Did 600 miles a week every week for 8 years then traded them in. I paid £1200 for it 2 years ago, did some mods/map to it and sold it for 4k. There was no wear on the steering wheel, gearknob or seats, it was literally a motorway mile muncher. He went to subaru for everything on it, tyres, wiperblades, every receipt was main dealer. 25 services, 4 cambelts, unreal.

I added the wheels, brembos, spoiler, sti seats/door cards and speedo, the bodywork was immaculate, ran like a dream.
