Question

anyone driven both and able to offer performance/driver experience differences. On paper the WRX is considerably faster (5.9 vs 7.1 to 60mph) but engine stats are not that far apart (204bhp vs 218bhp and similar, abiet less for the Golf, torque figures).

That said the Golf is dull as hell to drive anyway - it may be quality but it is far too sanitised.

I'm just looking for justifications for a STi UK rather than a WRX (or WRX with PPP) - but finances will be stretched a bit to go STi

One car mage did a WRX/S3/4motion review a while back.

Consensus was the Golf was totally outclassed and shouldn't even have been compared to the other to which were both vastly better in most respects.

WRX won as well

So bits falling off a car is quality now. bloke at work has one and he's sure the boot has been designed to store all the bits that fall off. Sounds like a Fiat.

I've driven both a 4-motion and a WRX, and its a bit like comparing Vanessa Feltz to Kylie. You'd go for the dull flabby one, but only if you were completely p1ssed. And you'd regret it in the morning...

Sorry folks ..... but that a load od ****. I was followed on a dual carraige way/A road by a 4motion, and to say it made me go for the PPP is an understatement!!!!

I couldnt make anything other than a few car lengths between us out of roundabouts. Not sure how they handle - but they have very decent mid range torque!!!!!!

Its a close call (on the straights) - about the same difference as my UK WRX to a "classic shape" UK scooby.

My car was fairly new at the time - so it may perform better against one now - but dont be fooled into thinking your gonna "fly off into the distance" ..... cause you aint

With the PPP... now thats a different question

Thanks for the URL - an interesting read. I totally agree with the comments on the Golf. Poor handling for the capabilities really - a waste being 4wd to be honest.

JZA - you can really tell the difference now between standard and PPP'd? From what you (and others) are saying I think I will do down this route and maybe upgrade to STi when the bank manager allows it.

Had little runin with 4Motion few months back. Very close but pulling away round the corners...slowly ! Mine is stock UK MY99 As for PPP, i'd also be interested in your experience of it as about to buy car from company and want to keep going with the warranty. Did you get both the PPP and the suspension work done ?

Er, jza, a couple of car lengths out of a roundabout is quite a big difference. The new WRX (standard) can’t put a couple of car lengths on the VTS in a straight line once rolling (i.e. no 4WD off the line advantage). It’s a sad fact of physics that if you want to totally wipe the floor with another car you have to be driving something far faster as opposed to just a few seconds quicker 0-100mph.

I think the golf is a great looking, comfortable and classy car but for driver enjoyment and head-turning looks you’ve got to go for the scooby.

There was a write up when the 1st MY01 came out between these 2 cars and the Audi S3

There opinion was to discount the Golf as not in the same league

Now My governor has one as his run around and his opinion is that a nice fast getaway great smooth run on a motorway but MY PPP'd MY01 WRX runs rings round it

He even prefers my car to his Porsche 996

Totally aggree about the few seconds thing.

A brand new porch 911 done me the other day, sailed past me as if I was stood still I had to move out the way big time.

Then he cruised into the distance, and I was doing a ton 30 !! (Ermm on a private road of course )

If you really wanna blow things away, spend the cash !!
