not being a tyre snob, can you get a great tyre under or just over £100 each?

I do less than 3k a year (that includes swapping to winter alloys from November to April/May).. so these tyres would be doing no more than 1-1.5k a year


So wanting some new rubber for my 19" GT2 alloys.
245/35/19

don't track day, don't drive mental... and think a decent tyre with a good WET rating wil be ideal to go for?

michelin pilot super sports are apparently the nuts , i don't use them and use ku39 on all the cars from a 500 bhp 500 ft pound rwd to a scooby plus prices are normally good , currently around 112 £ per corner with blackcirles

But do I warrant £250 a corner on a tyre that will do no more than 1500miles a year pottering to a few Midlands Meets and a few shows a year?


How do you find the KU39 on your cars for wet and dry grip? I'm quite tempted by those, the reviews are good and price is too.

I've just put 19" Pirelli p-zero's on the golf excellent in both wet and dry plenty of grip on them roundabouts and country lanes

ku39 wear well , and grip is good wet and dry , if they keep my v8 in a straight line then they will work well on a scooby

The only tyres in that list that would be any good are the Uniroyal Rainsports but the sidewalls are pretty soft.

I wouldn't compromise on tyres for a performance car or any car for that matter. Just bite the bullet and spend the extra money on a set of decent tyres to use in all weather. Your tyres will still last longer if your only using them for around 3k miles all year round. And you'd essentially get a 3-4 years out of them.

I understand money is a decider on many things but having a car with 300bhp + and fitting cheap tyres confuses me.

Goodyear Eagle F1's for a good price. Great tyres and highly regarded as being the PilotSports competitor.

Hankook stuff is now being fitted to lots of OE cars such as Audis for example. Good tyre for the money but wouldn't have said it was better than a 'Premium' branded tyre. Another option for you though.

Dunlops are OK. Some people rate them others dont. Again its over your £100 budget but its a decent tyre which will perform and last you a while.

Check Tyre Reviews online and see what people have to say about them first but at that price I'd be jumping on the Goodyears.

But if a tyre is 150mph+ rated and has a good wet grip rating.. A or B,C.

Does it make any difference if its £250 or £125 a tyre?




I've been to see my tyre guys today who are getting me some prices.

Interesting what they said about the list I have above.. On who owns what and are the same tyre with another name.... Avon & Cooper same company!!

cooper tires bought Avon many year ago...

I think the thing is down to personal choice.... if you bought a tyre and thought it was the best thing you had ever used and then somebody said it was made by XXXX would it make a difference..

I still find the factory Bridgestone RE050A are brilliant as an all-rounder and cheap as chips too. Just got a new set for £397 fitted

That's like saying a Pirelli that has the same speed rating and dry grip rating as say an R888 means there's no point spending more money because they will both perform the same in the dry ? We all known that's an inaccurate statement. Take those ratings with a pinch of salt.

Each to their own though if your contempt with buying some budget tyres for the car then go for it. I'd rather be spending money on good tyres than fancy exhausts and other look at me parts.

when I covered the BMW championship they used Kumho tyres and the guys were spending best part of £200 plus per corner yet get them up to full racing speed and they were horrid... we even had races where they were delaminating....

I don't know which Kumhos they were using but I would never even look at Kumho tyres after seeing them in use

may be good on a rally car !!

The BMW championship used them as it was the fastest racing championship using standard road tyres....

point I am making is all you guys keep saying how quick your cars are etc etc yet want to put tyres on that are not up for the job....

all down to personal choice as no 2 cars are set up the same or drivers drive the same !!!

i'm totally agreeing with you but no road tyre is going to last on a track , i melted a set of expensive road tyres in 30 mins gsd 3 from memory , race tyres for a race track , road tyres for a road , mpss are apparently the best but too much money for me , tyres as you say are very individual but ku39 work well more or less in his budget plus the reviews

I mentioned mpss to where I get my tyres from and they said theyll be no point as my mileage use is so low they'll start to crack by the time I get 15k miles out of them.

I've had my car just over 6yrs now and have done no more than 20k in that time.

After reading more reviews and getting advice from my man at MrTyre in Nottm I have opted for the Uniroyal rain sport 3.
there wasn't much in it on cost between the kumho, Avon or Uniroyal when fitted.

So I'm booked in to get them fitted on 29th, Saturday morning.

I'm currently looking at nankang ns2r's, possibly 180 compound. But they're only 16s, probably very expensive for 19s.

But ive read a few things now on tyre threads and quite a lot of people saying not to put crap tyres on a scooby. I understand this and do agree in most cases.

however, I do think you can put poor tyres on to learn about car control and certain driving techniques. - obviously not on the public road - but the rally school I went to last year always use poor tyres for this very reason.

I dont want want to start a debate or anything in particular but just wanted to put my 2 pence in as have read this so many times.

Glad you've found some tyres that suit your needs.

Damn, you should have looked on Camskill, Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 3's for £129.90 a corner or even the Hankook Ventus S1's are between £129.30-136.80, all in 245/35/19.

Did look on there. Still need fitting though .

Didn't go for Goodyear as theyre Dunlop I got told and wanted to move away from the Dunlop's I've got now.

Goodyear own the "Dunlop" brand although Japanese Dunlop tyres (as supplied to Japanese car manufascturers) are manufactured by Sumitomo Rubber.
