FRONT REGISTRATION PLATES ,LEGALLY REQUIRED?

Does anyone know if you legally have to have a front reg. plate on your car ,I've noticed an increasing amount of cars without them and thinking of doing the same ,purely cosmetic of course!
Normaly reliable sources confirmed that these plates were not a legal requirement although not widely known...

Does anyone know for sure??????

You need a front number plate for a MOT, so I would guess that they are a requirement, for day to day use.

Ooh, i'm sorry officer, I'm sure my plate was there when I left home... Look, the screws are still in place, maybe I hit a bird or something.... Yes sure, I'll get it replaced when I get home...
