Default My STi TMIC won't fit?!

Hi all,

A friend of mine was trying to change his 06 wrx intercooler to a STi TMIC that came from an 05 blobeye sti and it won't fit.

Apparently a 90 degree elbow pipe is needed but what size exactly? Also the IC brackets don't seem to line up either :-(

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Subaru Collector 555.

Did the intercooler come with the turbo to IC pipework?

The intercooler did come with the sti y pipe and brackets as well but where he has a td04 turbo and not a VF35 the turbo outlet is shorter so the pipe doesn't fit on completely.

I thought with it being a new age STi intercooler it should fit any other new age?

Hawk intercoolers are a different size (they aren't as deep) to blobs and bugs - this also applies to the associated scoop undertrays.

The turbo connecting pipe will need to be a DIY job if going to a TD04 - custom fit from something like a Samco silicon elbow . I'm also led to believe that due to the blob TMIC being much deeper than that of a hawk, fitting can be very tight around the A/C pipes at the firewall and may require some minor modification to those.

This video shows how to transplant a blob STI tmic to a hawk, explaining the turbo pipe issue:

I fitted an earlier newage STI intercooler to my 06 WRX with no issues at all. I was told it wouldn't fit as the hawks are drive by wire and slightly different, but the IC just went straight on with no issues at all. I did however buy brand new silicone pipes for top and bottom and make those fit my TD04 turbo. A few weeks later when I upgraded to the VF48 turbo all I had to do was slightly re-trim the pipes again.

Is he sticking with the TD04 turbo by the way? If so, no point at all in changing the WRX 06 intercooler. They are fine up to 300bhp which is the limit of the turbo when remapped to it's full potential.

Has he also changed the scoop under tray?

I purchased Samco 90deg elbow E90 51 part number for the bottom and Samco SCH70 straight piece for the top.

With slight cutting they both fit perfectly.
