Wrx type r V limited
so, a 9-10 hour round trip to see a car yesterday that was told on the phone, had "some, but not much history"

it was a good price, and good looking car (on internet pics) so thought it was worth a go

got there, and it was super low mileage, but had only 3 previous nct's (same as mot here in Ireland) and ZERO - yes, ZERO history- not a single receipt, or invoice

Guy had owned the car 8 years too

So
what would you do????

I would avoid. He's been dishonest and wasted your times so don't bother.
Don't know what else the car is hiding.

to be fair, it does look like a straight car, but there are too many small bits that made me second guess the car - then, there is zero history
pretty gutted about it actually- a younger me would have bought it

Sounds dodgy to me. Even if someone has been doing the maintenance themselves I'd expect receipts for parts and old mot's.

Owned a car for 8 years and not kept one receipt or old mot ummm something not quite right with that if you ask me ,, iv had a car for weeks and had receipts to put in the book

Unless it's never had anything spent on it and still has the same oil and everything as when he got it 8 years ago lol , either way i prob wouldn't be buying it

that's what I thought- there was a fair bit needed doing for it to be mint, but looked like a good car to start with- was umming and arring, and when he said there wasnt a single receipt, I decided it was a no go

offer like £1k less than advertised and spend that on a full checkup /service. its what i did when i bought my JDM v3 sti for £2k a few years ago. Im not going to sell the car (tracking it) so i dont really care about the history!

Like he said- HE knows the car- problem is, I don't, so wasn't worth the risk

Personally wouldnt put me off the car. As long as it sounded good and was the right kind of money.
At the end of the day a LOT of imports from Japan come with zero history as well.

Yeah, you're right-
I have an imported Gtr that came without history

thing is though, I would have thought that someone that has owned the car and "babied" it like he said, would have some receipts- even if it were just for parts

In the past 10 years of having my Gtr, it has accumulated a massive service history, to show work that has been carried out, to a future buyer

Even if he'd done all the servicing, maintenance etc himself, i would have thought he'd still have kept the receipts for parts. I'd avoid it if I was in your position.

A car freshly imported with no history and a car that has been in the UK with no history are two very different things. Let me explain why.

With a fresh import most of it will be in a different language but you also get the auction sheet which does have a lot of information.

With a car in the UK our roads etc are different and lets be honest with the age of these cars you would need to spend some money on it. If he hasn't spent anything when needed then what else has been skimped on.

Just because the engine is good doesn't mean the rest of it is.

No history can have an impact on the price.


The cars are getting rare and are quite old so there should be some receipts. Assuming the guy was wanting top money and if there are two cars priced the same, one with history and the other without then its a no brainer. Find another and doesn't waste your time since the guy lied to you.

It wouldn't put me off, it's either a good car or its not, and if it looks good it usually is.
Ask the seller the right questions and give it a good look over.

I have spent around £17k on mine and paid cash for just about everything so I have no paperwork for anything that's been done since my ownership. I understand how that will have an effect on its value but I'm not planning on selling it. Ever.

I've had my Type R over 12 years. In that time I've covered about 22k miles in it. Some of the servicing has been done by myself, some by local garages and some by specialists. I have very little history with it. Some of the paperwork has been lost, some got wet in my garage and some receipts mixed up with others from different cars. I know the car inside out and I know it's condition speaks for itself - 46k miles on a MY98 Type R with zero rust (kept in a heated garage). Judge each car on its own merit and gauge the seller wisely and you shouldn't go wrong.

Good points: if the owner sounds and looks like a 'wrong'un' and he lives in a tip then the car is probably best left.
