Default Why are so many Sti cars being broken?

I have been looking for some spares for my 2004 WRX lately and looking in the cars for breaking section. There seem to be loads of really nice looking, good condition, running Sti imprezas being broken for parts.

There is obviously something I am really not getting here. Why are what seem like perfectly good desirable imprezas being broken for parts? I was wondering if it is that they are worth more in parts even though they are running cars, but I don't see how that is judging by the priced parts for sale.

Can someone explain this to me...

It's the sad state of things but at the moment they're making good money in parts and it's why cars are getting scarce.

STI's for example have desirable engines, 6 speed boxes & front and rear brembo's to name a few parts, those parts alone 2nd hand nearly add up to the value of a complete car.

I wondered the same for ages. Brakes and 6 speed gear box Dccd are all worth quite abit then engine and turbo. Now if you bought say car below in link. I could see it's worth breaking.

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...obalID=EBAY-GB

But then again I've seen breakers like Matty breaking low mile minters and really don't get it. As it's not just a simple task if buying the car and selling the parts. First you have to remove all the parts, that takes time, plus wages if your paying staff, then store all the parts as 70% if the parts won't sell straight away.

To be honest it would be easier to service the car add extra 2000k on price and resell like so many traders do. Little work good profit.

The cars have had their day, tbh. Fuel guzzlers, no links to rallying any more, equalled by many hot hatches, is there still a point? Most were never stylish either...Tokyo taxi springs to mind.

same thing that happened to sapphire cosworths... they're simply worth more in bits.
i would think that once the numbers have dropped significantly due to cars being broken for parts, the prices for complete cars will rise. (ones in decent condition, anyway!)

It's the same thing repeated with the classics, at one point there was loads , so much the demand for parts was there and the actual car value was low, so many where broken up,
You could buy say a 94-96 wrx for £1500-2k no worries, 97-99 U.K. Cars £1800-2500 all with sub 100k and no real rot ,
Now they all been destroyed , broken, stripped, rotted , you try find a sub 90k car with the arches not hanging out of it for less than £3000. The same will happen with the new age stuff,

There's obviously a lot of demand for parts though, so there are clearly a lot of owners still about who are buying parts to maintain their cars, as well as upgrade them. There will come a tipping point though I guess, where parts supply outweights demand and then complete cars will become more valuable. There will always be a significant demand for the cars and therefore parts, due to their rather unique nature (even moreso compared to sanitised modern cars), even if they no longer have mass-market appeal.

Sad, but true.

Have to be bonkers to spend £30k+ on a new one that still only does 20mpg.

Thanks for the interesting replies. I guess I'm not looking at it in terms of economics I just find the idea of breaking a car with nothing wrong just so alien. I'm not complaining as I will hopefully be buying some Sti parts for my WRX soon.

It also kinda of worried me though because I'm looking at cars much nicer than mine being broken and thinking am I mad to be spending any more on parts and a remap. However, I do like my car a lot and I can't imagine anything else I can buy with performance for as cheap.

The classic's aren't being broken as much now a days, one demand has dropped as less on the roads, and there's plenty of rusty ones being broke all the time. One thing people do forget is there still being imported, STI and Type r classic's and other rare models are coming over here thick and fast and there rust free examples.

So were going to end up with alot of rare Jap imports in the country in mint condition. My mate has a 1993 model that has less rust than mine.

What is the value of them being broken? And the more sought after widetracks with dccd, brembos etc must fetch a few quid!

Once the prices of the WRX models start shooting up i bet the importers will be shipping them over in bulk next.
