Default Sti5/6 rear spoiler. Performance benefits?

Just wondering if there were any official performance benefits from such a large spoiler when compared to the earlier cars? Just got an rb5 wr spoiler for mine and was wondering if its mainly aesthetics?

I would take a bet that total removal would the biggest performance benefit

Depends what you want from the car and what you mean by 'performance benefits' really.

I guess at speeds of over 130 mph I provides some downforce to the rear of the car bur what happened to "simplify and add lightness" ?

It does cause a significant swirl behind the rear screen which a) keeps the rear screen clean, and b) aids airflow OVER the car.

And this is at normal road speeds.
