CHEAP SAFEWAY PETROL
#1
Has everyone seen the Safeway petrol promotion?
Spend £150 in store (large family shop?) and get 20p off a litre!
Yes thats 20p off a litre!!!
That makes it about 57p!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Almost makes running a Scooby a viable option.
It also runs in graduations of money paid/money off.
£25 - 2p off, £40 - 5p off etc up to the magic 20p off.
Get down there today!
Oh yeah, and they're doing some great beer promo's too.

True, but beer is beer, and if you can't get your way through £150's worth of booze in a week, then thou art a southern jessie!!
I jest, but you have a good point. Their own food is crap.
But is it not worth it for the peccy?

No proof other than the following
1) Read article in EVO last month re Shell optimax.
2) My mate the mechanic...! Says don't touch it as he has seen probs with 6 engines that were so coked up and all run entirely on supermarket fuel
Possibly an old wives tale, not qualified to offer any more but have spoken to many people who all agree and stay well away from the stuff.
Local Sainsbury's doesn't even stock SUL so no point in going there ....

My dear wife was filling the Micra up with supermarket go-go juice the other day when a chap pulled up in a 996. She asked him if he was insane filling his £60k car in a supermarket - did he really need to save 5p a litre to run his car? Guy musta thought that was pretty rich coming from a chick in a 'G' reg micra LOL
Anyway, she told him her 300bhp funcar was always run on optimax LOL, he said thats what happens when u run a cheapo japanese car.

I never use Supermarket fuel as they usually buy bulk from the cheapest source, will meet all the minimum standards but thats it.
The evo article showed the deposits caused by Supermarket fuel only (Civic), a mix of Fuels (Jag) and a Z3M ran only on branded fuel. The bm's was spotless but the Jag and Civic were getting coked up after only a few months.

How about you only spend £50 on food, then with the £100 you've saved spend on proper fuel
I wouldn't use supermarket fuel on the BBQ, let alone in a combustion engine

Put some in your Scoob and see it run like a bag-o-****e for yourself (you need to be used to be running on decent fuel for this to work BTW )

There are a lot of myths concerning supermarket fuel. Most fuel in Southern UK is either sourced from refineries at Miford Haven of near Southampton. It is then piped across country to distribution depots. These refineries havent got a Tesco pipe, Safeway pipe, Shell pipe coming from them. They have one pipe, usually 8"or 10" coming from them then splitting up and heading to these dist depots. This pipe will carry petrol and diesel alike.
It is here that the additives that make the petrol different are added. These additives are added in minute amounts and this is why the big companies try to justify their price hike against the supermarkets. Can you tell the difference, well I doubt it. It prob all in the mind.
As for Safeway petrol ,yes it is supplied by Texaco as is I believe Sainsburys.
It is not crap as some say as it has to conform to strictly monitored regulations.
Chip.

Good point and you are obviously alot more knowledgeable about petrol and it's delivery than myself... but all I say is 'read the article in Evo and look at the pictures taken inside the 3 engines and make up your own mind'.
I have heard (and it is only hearsay) that although the supermarket petrol conforms to certain standards, it only just makes the grade. The additives that you feel make a difference only 'in the mind', certainly make a difference in the Evo test and the photographs, and whatever Shell puts in Optimax it certainly makes my mind feel like it's travelling alot faster in it's Subaru than it used to......IMHO

Ah the old supermarket petrol is crap debate again.
Well its not.
Chip is right, Mrs Cat used to work at Mobil some years ago in their press office and guess what.....
...ALL of the petrol companies share fuel otherwise it would be a complete logistical nightmare trying to get it round the country and why would you have 2 refineries next to each other? The only difference is the additives which <GUESS WHAT> they all keep a stock of each others at the refineries. So I've seen a JET tanker at my Sainsburies but I've also seen a Texaco one too, its not crap it'sjust unbranded.
Obviuosly SUL or Optimax is a higher RON so that does make a difference but saying supermarket petrol is going to rot your engin is farcical and uninformed.
So there...

Roger,
Its the detergents that are added to branded petrol that prevents deposits forming mainly on the inlet valvles.
Its been said before but Shell have made these claims that "cheap" petrol causes this build up of sludge and this was confirmed by the independent engineers in Evo. They used a fibre optic camera down the spark plug hole to view the internals of the engines tested.
Most high performance engines have valve angles cut to a very fine tolarance with very smooth inlet systems, no good if after 6 months its all tarred up. It was also said you will not feel the damage that is being done as its very small and over a long time.

Well I can DEFINATELY tell the difference between SUL, Optimax, NUL and Supermarket stuff (I rate TESCO petrol as the worst available!) Safeway is fine if you can get SUL.
But there IS a difference!! I find that the lower the grade the louder the pinking!! and Tesco petrol is the worst! IMHO

I used to run my mkII Escort on Tesco petrol untill it burnt a piston out, have used Esso ever since without a problem. Dad swears by Tesco fuel.... his Zetec Escort is in a Ford dealership having it's valves replaced as I type.......
