Hi guys,

My scooby is coming up for its MOT and the garage I took it to asked if I wanted the cam belt changing as it's over 60k miles now. I had it imported from Japan just under a year ago and when it was imported the belt wasn't changed, I don't know if it was changed in Japan.

Is there any way to work out whether or not it needs changing? The garage I took it to, a Subaru dealership, said they couldn't determine if it looked like it had ever been replaced but wondered what other people thought to that?

Also, how much roughly would you expect a cam belt change to cost all in?

Better safe than sorry.

 

Get it done along with pulleys, tensioner and water pump. You then know everythings fine for a few years.

 

Had same issue here,didn't know if my car had been done so had the lot done,belt,idlers,water pump.As said better safe than sorry especially if your planning on keeping the car for some time.Interesting I asked my mechanic recently if needed doing again as it has been 5 years & he recons will be fine for another few years.Alot of people will disagree,but I am happy with that for now.

 

Thanks for the advice, I'll get it done. They said that they prefer to use non-Subaru parts as they are tried and tested and about £500 cheaper than the official parts. They didn't give names but are you guys generally happy with non-Subaru parts for that?

 

Import car parts will sort you out with good quality belt and pulley kit for around £180 and yeh defo replace it for piece of mind.
