Question

Insurance-wise, it may make sense for me to swap official Scooby ownership with my girlfriend (we jointly own the car anyway and drive 50/50 (ish ) Even if this saves me quite a few hundred quid now and again next year, will i regret having a second owner on the V5 form. Car is UK MY00, low milage, don't plan on selling for a few years unless in unforseen circumstances. What do you reckon?

Cool

XRS I think you can only insure a car like that if the person is your wife. A girlfriend doesnt count. Might depend on insurer tho

Don't think this would affect your re-sale value at all. Might do that myself actually!

You don't have to be the registered owner to insure a car. I had my Cosworth insured in my wife's name even though I was the named owner (and the RSOC member). All up front and declared, no problems.

Just insure it in your girlfriend's name and save yourselves some money.

anyone can insure a car. owner, spouse, friend, someone you met down the pub last week, it doesn't matter. You don't even need a license to insure a car!

contact the dvla about name change. my parants swapped ownership of a car once the dvla changed the name but as the address was the same the number of keepers stayed the same.

Even if they don't help, the number of keepers won't really effect the value, especially as the previous keeper will be your girlfriend who I pressume leaves at the same address.

Sounds like fairly good news all round then, I'll have to check out some of these possibilities.

Thumbs up

I've thought about this a few times. I use a friendly broker, and he has told me before that in the eyes of insurers a spouse will generally include boyfriend/girlfriend situations, especially if they are at the same address. I'd be inclined to actually contact your insurer and tell them what you are contemplating doing. The chances are that they will give you the same premium in either circumstance just for asking.

The V5 form is the registered keeper of a vehicle which is not always the same person as the owner. So it shouldnt make any difference when it comes to the insurance.
