LIGHTWEIGHT ‘Club Sport’ M3

Rumours are rife that BMW will be producing a lightweight version of the new M3 later this year. The M division has identified that a total of around 150kg can be shed by removing the bulk of the sound deadening linings and the deletion of some of the luxury items, such as electric windows and the entertainment systems. Air conditioning will still feature to keep the high-speed driver cool, while most of the deleted equipment will still be available on the options list.

The leather upholstered, electrically adjustable seats will be replaced by more enveloping, manually adjustable carbon race items. But the best news of all is that there will be a power-hike, taking the total up to around 350bhp, from the 338bhp the standard car already has. Expect the 0-60mph dash to dip below 5 seconds. Suspension modifications are also likely. The new SMG semi-automatic gearbox (see page 30) will also be included on the options list and a highly specified example is likely to cost close to £50,000.

hmmmm.....interesting!

So no one thinks that this is interesting then?

I think it will be a great track car.

for 50k you could buy a lot more trackday performance. - 10k for an old scoob and 40k for engine, suspension, brakes, drivetrain would make an excellent track car. Sounds like a laugh anyway

They'll also be making a road going version of the M3-GTR, which races in the European Le Mans Series.

With the V8 in the front and the best part of 400-450bhp, plus 400lb/ft torque, I imagine that would scare the weak minded and small children.

Cheers.

Cool

How heavy is the car before the weight loss?

150kg lost from a 1400kg car would be more interesting than 150kg removed from a 1600kg car.

The original homologation special M3, the e30 m3, is apparently ~1200kg+options (where options is mostly an electric sunroof, mostly).

According to Evo it is 1570kg. (and a few more if you go for the SMG)
