Question

I am considering Top Marques and Scoobynet. Bit wary about Auto Trader for attracting the wrong kid of attention/test pilots etc if you know what I mean

Any other good/safe/reliable places that you know of to advertise/sell an Impreza?

Many thanks
Rikki

To be honest I would have thought Autotrader was a good bet. After all what sort of person is going to buy an older scoob?

good point I guess - just scared of loads of people wanting to take it for a spin with no serious interest in buying it. Ultimately i will try Auto Trader if i don't have luck elsewhere but I want to get people's feedback for other places first

Well, if you place an ad in Top Marques, it goes on the website, which also shows up on the Auto Trader website as well, so no getting away from it i'm afraid.

Whatever you do, don't let them drive if they haven't got cover. When looking for mine the dealer's said they could sell cars 10 times over if the (younger) impressed testers hadn't been quoted 3K for 3PF&T!

Do they need to get temporary cover then, like for the day?

Dynamite - afraid I have other commitments and looks like my work is closing in the near future . Will be very sad to see her go.

Also worried abour car jackers or people that arrange to meet you to steal your car etc. You hear these stories and it gets you worried.

Rikki,

to give you another perspective, I brought my WRX from a Private AD on Autotrader website. Once the deal was done, a chat with the seller reviled that although he had got a few calls only two people ( myself included ) had turned up to look at the car.

I was able to test-drive the car as I have a "drive any car with the owners permission" clause on my insurance, but to be honest I wouldn't have bothered if the seller hadn't offered.

Similarly my old car (Mitsubishi FTO ) was sold through autotrader (WEB). Sold to the one buyer who called, and the test drive with me driving.

Exclamation

Car jacking - happened to me a few years ago. Now I don't want to scare anyone with my story but if you can avoid what happened to me by learning from my mistakes that's great.

Had 205GTI. Was asked to meet chap at train station. End of the line station so only 1 train arrives every 1/2 hour. Went to meet next train - no one there although some chap hanging around the station. Went home. 15mins later got a call - 'i'm at the station'. Drive up there and another chap was walking down the road near the station but coming from the wrong direction. Didn't feel right but needed to sell the car so ignored my instincts. Very smartly dressed, polite and well spoken.
When it came to switch over for him to drive I was stupid and went round the back of the car leaving keys in ignition. Doh ! As I came round to the passenger side he was putting it into 1st. Grabbed open door and managed to hang on as he drove off. Eventually managed to pull myself in despite him trying to push me out. One look at the guy and realised should have stayed out of the car. Had become very nasty. Decided best to get out again (had been trying to flog the car for weeks so better to take insurance !) Pursuaded him to slow down and jumped out.
Anyway, never caught the guy despite my mobile being on in the car and him hitting another car with mine !

Police told me there is a well organised chain of gangs running from Slough up through Birmingham and Manchester. They target hi perf cars in autotrader, arrange to meet at a bus or train station, get one of their mates to size you up then carjack you and ship the car up to the other end of the country for breaking.

Now this was a few years ago but put me off private selling for life. Will only ever have someone test drive my car with me and a mate together from now on. Will never meet at a station and will always trust my instincts.

Take care with you selling

OK, let me put the other side. I've been trying to buy one. If I buy a UK sourced, FSH, one owner car I would expect to pay top money. So I look at a car. No service history, owner lying about it being UK sourced, and its knackered, and top money. And another, and another. Autotrader seems to be full of optomists and dodgy dealers So I didn't buy one.

I'm about to repeat the process again, so I'll stick to scoobynet or similar.

Where ever you try to sell, you face the same problem with car jacking. Unfortunately if they want to take your pride and joy they will.

I was able to sell mine earlier this year via www.findit.co.uk

it's interesting about the insurance thing.

My policy states that no-one under the age of 25 can drive my car.

So if you've got a policy that states you can drive another car with the owners permission, make sure they check their details as well.

This is because (as I understand it), you can only drive another persons car (3rd party I believe) if it has:

a) Tax
b)MOT (unless <3yrs)
c) insurance cover

So, by an under 25 year old driving my car on their insurance actually invalidates my insurance and thus not all the critera is met for them to drive my car under their insurance.

Have fun with trying to sort out if they are insured or not.

As for advertising

I hate using Autotrader not becasue of test pilots etc. for every call that is genuine you get about 10 trying to sell you something.

And the service is cr@p. But I've always managed to sell using it.

IIRC if yoy book a 2 week advert it goes in to top marques anyway, not sure if TM still has an 8k minmum price tho.

I wouldn't recommend CarData - 3 months - Zero calls. Bar them promising the earth... blah blah...
