P1 - What is it?
#1
Hi
I have this nagging question...what exactly is a P1?
I know what it looks like.
I know it's one of the best Imprezas ever.
I know it has been "breathed upon by Prodrive to get it to grey-import power".
But is it a Turbo that's been breathed upon? Or an STi?
What was it before it became a P1?

Bruce,
A P1 started life as an STi 5.
In essence, it has had it's suspension replaced by prodrive, and been given a new rear wing and front lip, together with a certain amount of re-trimming inside. As you say, it is supposed to have STi power of around 280 bhp, and has been remapped to make it safe on our 95 ron unleaded. It was also the only way to by an official 2dr, complete with 3 year warranty.
As I'm sure people will mention, it's price was a subject of some consternation as, at £32k, it would have been possible to take a standard car, 'mod' it to the same spec, and still have change. However, you would lose your warranty in doing so.

It has the drivetrain/running gear of the STI5 (including ABS and sliding calliper rear brakes) and the body of a Type R. Great car, especially if a warranty is important to you. Evo magazine recently reiterated their opinion that it's better than the UK STI and Evo7...but who cares what journos say? I'd have had one, but something that suited me better came along
